Description: This is the academic library for Lawson State Community College, a two-year college located at the city limit shared by Birmingham and Bessemer, Alabama. The library is in Building D on the college's west campus in Bessemer.
Lawson State is one of Alabama's oldest two-year colleges. The school's technical division opened in 1949, as Wenonah State Technical Institute, on what is now the East Campus in Birmingham. In 1965 Lawson State Junior College opened in Bessemer, only about a quarter mile west of Wenonah State, on what is now the West Campus. The new school was named in honor of its first president, Dr. T.A. Lawson. In 1973 the two schools merged under the unwieldy name Lawson-Wenonah State Junior College and Technical Institute. Finally the name was shortened to Lawson State Community College.
The two Lawson State campuses are not connected by a walkway. It is necessary to drive from one campus to the other. There are no library facilities on the East Campus.
