Description: Michigan is home to a diverse community of writers whose work inspires, enlightens, and engages. On Saturday, September 28, the University of Michigan’s English Department Writing Program and its Helen Zell Writers’ Program will celebrate Michigan’s great writers and the state’s enduring literary traditions at the 2nd annual State of the Book Symposium & Bookfair, co-hosting a day-long series of public events in Rackham Auditorium that showcase the state’s leading literary stars, as well as the next generation of Michigan writers:

• a reading and presentation by elementary school writers affiliated with 826michigan, in conjunction with the release of their annual OMNIBUS anthology;
• a performance poetry event starring teen participants from the Neutral Zone and InsideOut Literary Arts Project;
• panels on women writing memoir, writers from the Upper Peninsula, and writers who use the supernatural to elucidate Michigan’s past and to imagine its future;
• a bookfair in Rackham Lobby, featuring more than a dozen presses and literary journals from across the state of Michigan.

The day’s events will conclude with a keynote conversation featuring an award-winning fiction writer or poet—last year’s conversation was between Charles Baxter, an award-winning fiction writer and novelist, and Philip Levine, a former Poet Laureate of the United States and winner of a Pulitzer Prize for poetry.
