John Francis, Ph.D., is known the world over as the Planetwalker. In 1971, he witnessed an oil spill in San Francisco Bay. The effects of the spill compelled him to stop using motorized vehicles. Several months later, he took a vow of silence. His non-motorized lifestyle lasted twenty-two years, and ... (more)his silence seventeen. During that time Dr. Francis walked across the United States earning a B.A., an M.S. and a Ph.D. He later sailed and walked through the Caribbean and then walked the length of South America. During this time he was appointed United Nations Environment Goodwill Ambassador and recently was a speaker at the prestigious 2008 TED conference in Monterey. Dr. Francis will speak of his journey, his unique perspective on the environment, sustainability, and how we can each make a difference in our world. 44th Annual SF Library Big Book Sale (September 25 at 10:00am)
300,000 books for $1 - $5; September 25-28. All books remaining on Sunday priced $1 or below. Purportedly the largest West Coast book sale. Event is free, benefits SFPL education programs.

Friends of the San Francisco Public Library Big Book Sale (September 24 at 10:00am)
Held at Fort Mason Center’s Festival Pavilion, the sale features over 300,000 books, DVDs, CDs, books on tape, vinyl and other forms of media. All books $5 or less and the sale is FREE and OPEN to the public. The five-day extravaganza is a logistical feat that involves over 300,000 books in over 50 ... All proceeds from the Big Book Sale are given to the San Francisco Public Library to fund education programs that promote literacy for children, teens and adults.
