API - application programming interface; allows scripts and programs to access data

AR - Accelerated Reader, a reading program (with online quizzes) for elementary and secondary schools

ARC - advanced reader copy

BM - BookMooch, an online book trading site

BOMBS - Books off my book shelves, a challenge group to read your books (may have been replaced with ROOT, below)

BOS, BotS, BOYS - Books off [the|your] shelf, another challenge group

CA - circa, approximately

CK - Common Knowledge

CSV - comma-separated values; LibraryThing can export some of your data in this format

DDC - "Dewey Decimal Challenge," one of the many challenges available on LibraryThing

DDS - Dewey Decimal System, a popular method of arranging books (often found in public libraries)

DJ - dust jacket

ED - edition or editor

ER - Early Reviewer, a LibraryThing program allowing members access to advanced reader copies of titles

ETA - Edited to add

FAQ - frequently asked questions

FF - the Firefox web browser

FRBR - Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records

GN - graphic novel

GSLIS - graduate school of library and information science

HC - hardcover

HTML - HyperText Markup Language: http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/

IE - (1) the Internet Explorer web browser; (2) id est, meaning "that is" or "in other words"

ISBN - International Standard Book Number

ISSN - International Standard Serial Number

LIS - library and information science

LC or LoC - Library of Congress (U.S.); can also describe a classification system used in many academic and large public libraries

LCC - The Library of Congress Classification (another system, similar to the Dewey Decimal system)

LP - large print

LT - LibraryThing

LTFL - LibraryThing for Libraries

LTL - LibraryThing Local

LTER - See ER.

LTMG - LibraryThing Member Giveaways

MLS or MLIS - Masters of Library (and Information) Science, the standard professional degree for U.S. librarians

MMPB - mass-market paperback

NF - non-fiction

NYRB - New York Review of Books

ODP - original date of publication

OP - original post(er)

OOP - out of print

P or PP - page(s)

PB or PPB - paperback

ROOT - Read Our Own Tomes, a challenge group

RSI - Recommend Site Improvements, a LibraryThing group for suggestions

RSS - Really Simple Syndication; a way to retrieve updates of certain data through a browser or RSS reader

SF - science fiction (speculative fiction)

SN - screen name

TBR - to be read

TIOLI - "Take It or Leave It" (one of the challenge groups on LibraryThing)

TPB - trade paperback

TPTB - "The Powers That Be" (a nickname for Tim, the site administrator)*

TSV - tab-separated values; a file format similar to csv

ULTB - Unique LibraryThing Book (see the group for more information)

URL - Uniform Resource Locator; internet site address

WL - wishlist

YA - young adult
