Creative Commons

What?

The data in LibraryThing's "Common Knowledge" section is available to all under the following Creative Commons license:

This is a very permissive license. Put simply, you can take and use anything from Common Knowledge, so long as you provide attribution to the LibraryThing community. You can change it. You can do new things with it. You can even use it commercially. Make millions, we dare you!

Attribution

The license allows us to specify how the data must be attributed.

Wording

  • Preferred: Powered by the LibraryThing community
  • Acceptable: Courtesy LibraryThing

Method

  • You must link to LibraryThing wherever this is possible (e.g. web pages, emails, Flash).
  • For other media, you must include the URL, if not inordinately difficult (e.g. sky-writing). One way to do this would be to change "LibraryThing" to "LibraryThing.com."
  • If your use relates strongly to a specific author or work, you must link to the appropriate work or author page on LibraryThing. Otherwise, you can link to the home page.

Other caveats

  • We are not lawyers. We are not offering legal advice. In case of conflict, the CC license is the final word, not what's on this page.
  • This license should not be construed so as to infringe LibraryThing's other, reserved rights, such as trademark. In particular, your attribution should not create doubt about what is and what is not from LibraryThing if this doubt is likely to reflect poorly on LibraryThing (e.g. a porn site).
  • So far, this license only applies to the "Common Knowledge" parts of the site.
  • There are many ways to fake or hide a link (e.g. hidden text, rel=nofollow, using JavaScript to hide it, etc.). Your link must be a real link.
  • LibraryThing competitors who use this data must send us a photo of their president or CEO holding a piece of paper reading "LibraryThing is better" or "We suck."
  • Just kidding.
