[edit] Overview

The Gallery view from your profile allows you to see what the authors of your books look(ed) like. If another LibraryThing member has uploaded a public-domain image for that author, it will be displayed.

[edit] Concepts

In order to display an image for an author, the following conditions must be met:

  • someone must upload an image
  • that image must either be public-domain or be uploaded with permission from the image owner (and a link to verify such permission)

Just because an image is on the web does not grant everyone permission to use it. LibraryThing is a commercial enterprise, not a non-profit, so some images with Wikipedia or Creative Commons licensing may not be eligible to be uploaded here. LibraryThing member volunteers police uploaded images and flag pictures with questionable legal standing for the site. If you have uploaded an author photo but it's not displaying, consult the missing picture help page.

[edit] Features

At the top of the page are listed four different display options for the author gallery:

  • authors: all your authors (with and without pictures)
  • with pictures: only your authors who have pictures uploaded
  • without pictures: only your authors without pictures
  • popular authors without pictures: the most popular authors for the entire LibraryThing community who have yet to share a mug shot...help them out if you can!

If you hold your mouse over an image (but don't click), you'll see the author's name in the top left of the picture. Sometimes a photo credit will be listed on the bottom right. If you click the picture (or an author's name from some views), you'll go to that author's page, where you can see more about him or her and upload a picture if you'd like.

[edit] Notes and Frequently-Asked Questions

[edit] How can I upload a picture of my favorite author?

First, check the guidelines on the picture uploading help page so that you know how to indicate that you have permission to use the image. Then, just go to the corresponding author page and click on the "add a picture" link near the upper left corner to begin the upload process. Please note that author images are intended to be illustrations or photos of the authors in person, not just images representative of their spirit.
