I poached this one off a friend's reading list and I'm glad I did. This is an odd duck of a book. Its part survival stories, part tribute to the author's father, part how not to act stupid when lost in the woods, and part celebration of how wonderful it is to be alive. This is the kind of book that will inspire you to put blankets and matches in the trunk of your car - at the same time as it urges you to live life fully and taste all life has to offer. ( )

Review: Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzales.

Not what I expected. I thought the book was going to be an adventure gone wrong and survival as an ending. However, it was about many survival techniques within different true adventures throughout the years. Yet, it also told how some people survive and why some people don’t. The author explained how he research and determined which stories to relate to the reader to allow our imaginations to follow along with his descriptions and opinions. As, a skiing, water rafting, mountain climbing, hiking accidents and other adventures that most people try and are in a situation that determines whether they survive or not.

I found the book interesting and educating. Survival depends on skill and not thinking just because you’re a pro at something that it makes you a candidate for survival. It was well written and well researched. Like the author said, “Who Lives, Who Dies, And Why”. A good read….

I enjoyed the first half of this book but I felt the second half dragged, going over the same things that had been talked about in the first half. It was much more scientific than I had anticipated, with a lot of information on the brain included. I really enjoyed the way the book focused on what makes some people survivors. it makes you wonder what type of person you are: a survivor or not? You quickly realize that no one can really know for sure until the moment happens; where you have to choose life or death. Interesting concept. Some of it seems like common sense. Some of it seems like the author is reaching a little. But overall an interesting read. ( )

Audio book!
Funny mix of science and voyeur's paradise. Accounts seem hard to categorize and even more so to compare concerning a supposed survival behaviour. Brain and hormone mechanisms are easy enough to understand, but just how much survival really depends on skill and not just on bare luck is a crude overestimation in my eyes.
Having said that, I have enjoyed the book tremendously (very well written - and read, for that matter). The style is like the content. Always witty, sometimes sober and scientific, but often enough rather cool, ironic and self-deprecating. Lingers a bit too long on obvious cases for the sake of supposed interest (e. g. Simpson)

Would I recommend this book? Yes, especially if you have never had to employ a survivor mentality in your life. I would also recommend this book to those who are leaders as well as to those who teach outdoor skills or lead trips into the wilderness. Not a handbook by any means, this book does offer big picture advice with very diverse application. If I were to sum it up this book said to me (and these are my own words):

If you are going to do something “stupid” be smart about it.

"Unique among survival books...stunning...enthralling. Deep Survival makes compelling, and chilling, reading."—Penelope Purdy, Denver Post

After her plane crashes, a seventeen-year-old girl spends eleven days walking through the Peruvian jungle. Against all odds, with no food, shelter, or equipment, she gets out. A better-equipped group of adult survivors of the same crash sits down and dies. What makes the difference?

Examining such stories of miraculous endurance and tragic death—how people get into trouble and how they get out again (or not)—Deep Survival takes us from the tops of snowy mountains and the depths of oceans to the workings of the brain that control our behavior. Through close analysis of case studies, Laurence Gonzales describes the "stages of survival" and reveals the essence of a survivor—truths that apply not only to surviving in the wild but also to surviving life-threatening illness, relationships, the death of a loved one, running a business during uncertain times, even war.

Fascinating for any reader, and absolutely essential for anyone who takes a hike in the woods, this book will change the way we understand ourselves and the great outdoors.
