Work detailsDragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon (1991)
ereader ebook The adventure continues! I loved how this started with Clare and Brianna in Scotland in 1968, and how Clare knew who she needed to contact to get some help to figure out what had happened with all her friends and family after she left the Highlands in 1745 and came back to her own time, and to Frank. Brianna must have brought her so much happines, and at the same time so much pain, since she looks so much like Jamie! The story-telling continued to be wonderful, and I was amazed by the details, both of what Clare told Bree, and the side-story with what happened with Jamie in 'his' time. He had a hard time with it all, living in that cave for seven years, and then, using himself to save his family once more. I was so afraid for him when Geneva tricked him into sleeping with her, and the subsequent arrival of William - such irony with that name as well, as it was the name of his older brother. Almost meeting Geilis in 1968 was scary, she really was a witch, no matter what time she was in. This series is so wonderfully written, the characters all have flaws, but continue to grow, and change. And they are all still very much loveable, at least they are to me. I'm not actually reading this one...it's a total unabridged audio experience. This book is 33 discs long...about 40 hours of listening (and I'm on disc 18). It's going to be another month (easily) before I finish. Right now I'm just trying to figure out how Claire gets back to Jamie. He's supposed to be dead and there's like 5 more books after this one. I'm quite confused. 11/24/08 - I'm almost done! Just a few discs left. I'm really over these characters. And I just want it to end! 12/11/08 - FINALLY FINISHED! And now I have to read the next one because this one ended with a really big "What?!" Now I just have tons of questions...but I have the Outlandish Companion that I intend to read so I can skip a couple of the books. I read this book before realizing Outlander existed, and for that reason, I'm very fond of it. Though I know it is disliked by some, I found the tension of the section between past and present to be very compelling. Obviously, much of the story happened in the past...so how did she get back to the present? no reviews | add a review Is contained inOutlander, Books 1-7 by Diana Gabaldon Outlander / Drangonfly in Amber / Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon Outlander, Books 1-6 by Diana Gabaldon Outlander, Books 1-5 by Diana Gabaldon Outlander, Books 1-4 by Diana Gabaldon Outlander / Dragonfly in Amber / Voyager / Drums in Autumn / The Fiery Cross / Lord John and the Private Matter by Diana Gabaldon Has as a reference guide/companion

The first time I read Dragonfly in Amber I found myself crying in a few separate sections of the book.
*Spoiler Alert*
One instance in particular, where Claire has a miscarriage, always makes me tear up. While I haven't had the experience of a husband being in prison for dueling, or almost losing my life to a fever in a French hospital, I have known the great grief of having lost a child to miscarriage. And nothing is as heartbreaking as the ending when Jamie sends Claire back to the stones to return to the future in order to keep her safe from the British soldiers and the battle at Culloden.
I also really enjoy reading Brianna's reaction to learning that her father is a Scottish warrior from the eighteenth century. I think that anyone in their right mind would be skeptical if their mom suddenly claimed to have travelled back and forth through time to return impregnated by a man from the past.
*End Spoilers*
All in all, this is a worthy sequel to Outlander. If you liked the first book then you should also love Dragonfly in Amber. (
