From THS collection. !st in trilogy - Guardian of Time. Really struggled to labor through this book. The author's attempts to invoke humanity's better qualities were lame and obvious. Characters seemed contrived and unbelievable. The author's use of the narration changing with each chapter - first from Isabel's and then from Ethan's was unique and effective. The fantasy's setting and world was loosely conceived, preventing the reader from being absorbed. The ending battle scene may appeal to those who thrive on action, but, still, the described battles lack vigor. NOT looking forward to reading any of the remaining titles in this series. Do not expect this title to win-over non-fantasy readers. ( )

Ethan is Named, someone who has the ability to travel between times and help a group ensure that the present continues as it should. There's another group determined to allow chaos to reign. It's a fairly common trope in time-travel stories and it's not badly handled here. However it's not the best of it's type either, that won't stop me looking to read the next story.

I liked Ethan and his optimism and I would like to know what's going on with the two groups involved in messing with time. There a fair amount of stuff flagged for the future and there's a promise that not everyone is as innocent as they might look. ( )

I'm not exactly a time travel fanatic but this book kept my attention the entire time. I really like that the chapters bounced between the two main characters Ethan and Isabel. The idea of going into the past to save the future intrigued me. A good read. ( )

The Guardians of Time Trilogy by Marianne Curley is one of my favorite series from one of my favorite authors. In this series Ethan and Isabel have to go back in time to help save the future from the Goddess of Chaos Lathenia. ( )

Guardians of Time Trilogy

The Named

Book description

Amazon.com (ISBN 0747557640, Paperback)

Sixteen-year-old Ethan Roberts has more to worry about than his lackluster grades. As one of the Named, he is charged with secretly protecting history from the Order of Chaos--an evil group that seeks to alter the past to achieve ultimate power in the present. Ethan is given orders to train his first apprentice, 15-year-old Isabel Becket, in a few short weeks as his growing nightmares soon make it apparent that trouble is brewing on a cosmic scale. The two are helped by Arkarain--Ethan's violet-eyed, blue-haired, 600-year-old mentor--and their secret powers. Isabel is a healer. Ethan is a master of illusion. Their stories evolve in rotating chapters, each told in a similar first-person point of view that makes chapter transitions disorienting at times. But The Named is at its strongest when school and parents fade. Its imagined settings are a pleasure, from the booby-trapped catacombs that house the Prophecy that was written before time to the Citadel--a way-station to the past--with its wildly decorated rooms. Ethan and Isabel's missions to Medieval England and colonial America are also a thrill, indicating that the adventures detailed in this book are just the beginning for this duo. (Ages 10 and older) --D.J. Morel
