A good beach or airplane read. What happens when a woman must confront a man who sadistically and brutally raped her a decade ago. He's now graduated to gruesome serial killings and she's the prosecutor from hell. It's a good, workable hook, but there's very little art in what turns into a typical cat and mouse piece. Of course, there's the decent, metrosexual cop to reassure her that love is possible, as well as his lovable Latino sidekick. The author doesn't do much with location--South Florida--and there's a huge chunk of life missing in the main character's arc. The courtroom scenes are ok, with one question looming over the procedings: is anyone going to divulge that the defendant raped the prosecutor? The dialogue is one of the better things here. ( )

From Amazon:

C.J. Townsend is a brilliant prosecutor known for keeping her cool even when trying the most horrific cases. The latest: an accused serial killer who savors cruelty and considers murder an art. But this case is different. C.J. recognizes the suspect. She knows what he’s capable of. After all these years, she still has the nightmares to prove it. Now she’s walking the fine line between justice and revenge. Even C.J. isn't prepared for where it will take her.

My Thoughts:

This is the first book by this author that I have read...but it won't be my last. The book is good on so many different levels. It's a thriller that'll have you turning the page, it's a courtroom drama, that'll really suck you in, and it's got some twists and surprises that make it worth the effort all alone. You really feel the characters pain, frustration and anger. There are a few loose ends in the story but overall it is an excellent read. ( )

I am writing this as an afterthought May 14th, 2014 as I am reading [b:The Cutting Room|13649739|The Cutting Room (C.J. Townsend #3)|Jilliane Hoffman|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1343127215s/13649739.jpg|19269336] (currently at 63%). One of the things I did not like was how twisted the ending was in serving justice. Well, just to say, justice comes back with a vengeance in the the Cutting Room to bite back. While it it is not clear how bad it will be, C J still has problems and the decisions made here might hunt her in the future. Is this required reading for The Cutting Room? No, but it helps. Parts of it are repeated as flashbacks of memory in The Cutting Room. Also as I have not yet finished it, I may change my review here and then I will write a review of The Cutting Room. ( )

Retribution is a bit of a colour-by-numbers legal thriller; enjoyable as relaxed holiday reading. Hoffman makes it clear that we're supposed to sympathise with her protagonist C. J. Townsend,, a driven Miami prosecutor whose rape as a young woman in New York casts a shadow over her life. Yet the lengths C. J. goes to in order to make her rapist 'pay' make it hard to keep rooting for her. Especially once it becomes apparent that C.J.'s judgement is hopelessly compromised and leading her astray. ( )

Excellent book, I really enjoyed it.

There were a few plot holes, but they didn't detract from my enjoyment.

Recommended. ( )
