I didn't get very far - Chapter 5 only.. it was so detailed with ramblings about how Carlin always needed to be safe, and couldn't do stuff because Brad was could find her.. and Zeke went on and on about the cooking and laundry.. mundane tasks. Both situations were repeated over and over. So I had to stop the book. When Carlin was joking around she came across more of a silly airhead.. not funny at all.

As I was listening to the audio edition, the reader I found limited - not enough voices for the characters, and while her voice was not annoying, I would have liked more enthusiasm and expression in the reading.

I usually enjoy Linda howards books.. but this one is not for me. Sadly it goes into my small DNF pile. ( )

I enjoyed this book. A good beginning to a new series. Unfortunately, there hasn't yet been a follow up. In this book, the main character, Carlin, is running from a stalker ex. She lands in Battle Ridge at Zeke's ranch. There she finds a hiding place but also love. The only problem I had with the book was that the stalker ex seemed too extreme. Otherwise this was a well written enjoyable story. ( )

Good start to a new series from the two Linda's. The series is set in a small Wyoming town with a likable cast of a characters.

Carlin Reed lived in Houston and her two dates with a police officer ended up with an obsessed manic. When her cries for help went unanswered from his fellow officers she decided she needed to move and hoped that would deter him. But he followed her and in a case of mistaken identity her friend was killed in her place. She decides is time of go off the grid and ends up in a dying town called Battle Ridge, Wyoming.

She befriends the local diner owner and starts working there to replenish her dwindling cash supply. She tells her the truth about what she is running from and that she needs to be paid under the table.

Zeke Decker's owns and runs a ranch and just lost his cook, housekeeper and a woman that was as close to a mother when she decides to go live with her daughter. He knows he is in trouble as his men expect 3 good meals a day and he cant cook and is the worst housekeeper. After months of one of his young ranch hands being the cook with disastrous results he finally gives in to his cousin's request to give Carlin the job.

These two do a dance around each other for quite a while. She has her secret she tries to hide and refuses to get involved with anyone when she knows any time she may have to run again. He's already had one bad marriage behind him and wasnt looking to get married again but something about Carlin starts to chip away at him.

Most of the book is what I would categorize as a contemporary western romance. The beginning and the end have suspenseful moments that were well written.

Oh my goodness! This was flat out yummy! I loved Zeke and his inner thoughts were down right entertaining. When Carly arrives in Battle Ridge, she's hiding from a stalker. She meets Kat, Zeke's cousin, at her diner in town and takes a job as a waitress. They become fast friends, but Kat can't afford to keep Carly on during the winter months. So she takes it upon herself to find her another job. Meanwhile, Zeke's down one housekeeper and one wrangler at the ranch. Carly would be the answer to his Chief Cook and Bottle-washer problem if she was older and uglier.

This is a book that started off fast and the momentum never waned. The chemistry between Zeke and Carly was terrific. I love strong heroines. The good natured teasing between the ranch hands was endearing and I liked how they brought Carly into their extended family. Brad was pretty spooky and added a lot of suspense to the story.

I laughed, I cried, I worried and cheered the couple on. I'll be watching for more from this series! ( )

Woman on the run from a seriously creepy and dangerous stalker, who happens to be a cop. She runs and is almost killed by this man and goes into deep hiding on a ranch in Wyoming. There she has to learn to be a cook, maid, and hardest of all trust. Which is something any girl would want with Zeek being the man to trust. She burns food, messes up cakes and muddles along. But can't seem to ever let her guard down. The cowboys on this ranch aren't quick to quit on her.
This was my first LInda Howard read and I enjoyed the heck out of it. The narration was fabulous and the slow had me glued to my headphones ! It's a sweet romance with a twisted feck as the evil villain. ( )

Book description
Carlin Reed lives in fear, off the grid, moving from place to place. So Battle Ridge, Wyoming, a small town in the middle of nowhere, seems like a good place to lie low for a while. But after becoming cook and housekeeper to cattle rancher Zeke Decker, Carlin suspects that she’s made her first mistake. Rugged, sexy, and too distracting for his own good, Zeke is pure temptation mixed with something deep and primal that makes Carlin feel almost safe. Soon things are getting way too hot in the kitchen.

Zeke doesn’t challenge Carlin’s terms: cash, dead bolts, and no questions. It is easy to see that she’s a woman in trouble. Problem is, he’s so blindsided by his attraction to her he can’t think straight. Zeke tries to stay all business, no complications—but that game plan is sabotaged the second Carlin gets under his skin. And when her terrifying past follows her to the ranch, Carlin faces a heartbreaking choice: run away from the man she loves, or put him in the crosshairs of a madman.
