... retirement apartment and "downsizing" her collection. I was only able to find one VMC, a Dial edition of Mary Webb's Precious Bane. But it's something I didn't own and haven't read, so I was satisfied. ... is the obvious connection between Mary Webb and Stella Gibbons...in that Gibbons was consciously parodying Webb's work (Precious Bane) in writing Cold Comfort Farm. ... reads that look good. ???? My first Virago was definitely Precious Bane by Mary Webb. I read it not long after the BBC Masterpiece Theatre presentation appeared in the late 1980s, it was definitely a black Virago, and I was about 15. After that, I actively sought out those black covers (then the green ones, etc.). ... of a Provincial Lady by EM Delafield. Or if might not have been any of those....:)
actually I think it might have been Precious Bane by Mary Webb! I loved Precious Bane and I have Gone to Earth sitting on my TBR pile -- hopefully I'll get to it when the semester is over. Mary Webb is lovely, but Morrison is brilliant. I'll admit, Paradise is not her masterpiece, but it does have some really intriguing insights into how closed ... ... Gone to Earth in the mail today having found a used copy via Amazon -- I'm looking forward to reading it as I so enjoyed Precious Bane. ... It was still there!! I'll post it next week.

A Compass Er ... I loved Precious Bane. I think Mary Webb is one of those writers who has not received the attention she deserves. As for me, I still searching for Old Lady Esteroy (not a Virago but one janeajones is responsible for my current state of Esteroy booklust) #89/91/92
I read both Precious Bane and Gone to Earth in the late 80's. What both heroines have, which I interpret as magical and mystical, is - as Jane says -a shining goodness, a complete oneness with nature, a 'connection' to something beyond themselves. The girl in Gone to Earth is ... Well I put off going to Italy with Pinocchio to spend a couple of days in Shropshire with Precious Bane. My goal is to travel to both Italy and Japan to see why Some Prefer Nettles by Junichiro Tanizaki before I have to go back to work next week. Precious Bane has a fairytale quality, partly evoked by Webb's descriptions of the Shropshire landscape and the dragonflies in Spring, partly by the dialect, and partly by young narrator/protagonist whose shining goodness does not protect her from the sorrows of the world. I finished it last ... >84, 87 Precious Bane is moving up my TBR pile, where it has been for too long! Magical/mystical sounds good right now. ... At Mrs Lippincote's and I own 10 others. Angel is my least favorite because the lead character is so unpleasant.
#84 Precious Bane is indeed almost magical. Webb seems to have tapped into something mystical.

I can't wait to read The Collected Short Stories of Jean Rhys and the fabulous 1929 edition of Precious Bane. I think this may be the oldest book I own and as a history geek, thinking of who may have read this book over the past 80 years is almost as exciting as the ... Precious Bane landed in my mailbox today. Thank-you aviddiva! aviddiva -- might I please have Precious Bane if no one else has claimed it? I promise to cherish it... I have an extra copy of Precious Bane if anyone is interested. It's a Penguin trade paperback, not a virago, and has a bit of a water stain on the lower right corner, but it's in good shape apart from that. I get a chuckle out of seeing that both Gone to Earth and Precious Bane appear in Ernest Hemingway's library. Ooh wonderful! Je ne sais pas si la période est la même que celle d'Austen, mais j'avais beaucoup aimé Sarn de Mary Webb. En plus, ça finit bien ! Cold Comfort Farm was a mickey-take of sombre countryside tales like Precious Bane and when I read the latter, I could see the echoes clearly.
Zadie Smith On Beauty was an homage to Howard's End - again, I read that second and there was a whole HEAP of very clever echoes.
Hope ... ... christiguc....EVERY Virago is of notable and endearing worth! My favourite has been Mary Webb with Gone To Earth and Precious Bane. Gone to Earth brought me to tears! I can't believe it took me this long to remember one of my very favorite romances!
Precious Bane is a justly famous English novel by Mary Webb dating from the earlier part of the last century. It's heroine, Prue Sarn, was born during the very early 19th century with a harelip, a physical ...
