This (and its H-O companion volume) is probably the definitive reference on American slang, unless you're interested in words beginning with P-Z. Unfortunately, there was a falling out between the editor and the publisher which had to do with the use of profanity ("The F Word" by Jesse Sheidlower was the direct outcome of this dispute), so the last volume was never published. I understand that the Oxford University Press plans to bring it out. ( )
