Seriously cannot *stand* some of the tropes in this series, but the world building is good. ( ) The third book has Nikki and Michael still in love but also not compromising on how to meet each other halfway about Nikki being involved with Michael's circle work. And until there is a "vision" Michael was very happy to listen to and then ignore everything that Nikki said or asked about it. The case that they were working on was a way to bring home once again that Michael needs Nikki in his professional life. Will be interesting to see what happens with the next book. Digital review copy provided by the publisher through Edelweiss In typical Michael and Nikki fashion, Nikki hasn’t been at the hotel where she’s investigating yet another disappearance much more than few minutes before she’s brutally attacked. Michael isn’t there to rescue her because he’s been off on his own investigation for 2 months, and Nikki was most emphatically not invited. Not content to stay home and out of the action, Nikki jumped at the chance to investigate the disappearance of the wife of one of Jake’s friends. Pretty soon it becomes clear that there is yet another evil vampire behind multiple disappearances, and this time, Jake’s wife, Mary, is a target. Nikki’s powers continue to grow and evolve, and her relationship with Michael is strained to the breaking point by their mutual stubbornness. Not everyone will make it through this time around. Nikki and Michael are starting to annoy me with their childish arguments. However, by the end, I think there is hope that they will grow up and get on with it already. Nikki’s powers have taken some unusual turns by the end as well, so it will be interesting to see how they continue to evolve in the next novel in the series. Having enjoyed reading Arthur's work before, I was thrilled to have the chance to read and review Chasing the Shadows. I have not read the previous books in this particular series however Arthur was able to quickly catch me up to speed while at the same time throwing me right in the middle of the action. Michael was returning home having just finished a case only to be given a new one that Nikki had already agreed to look into. The reader quickly learns that despite having worked together in the past Michael wants Nikki home safe and sound while Nikki wants right in the middle of the action. Arthur has successfully set up a great conflict for her two leading characters and also thrown them into the middle of a great mystery. I really enjoyed getting to know these two characters and see both characters grow as they both had to get used to new abilities as well as learn to compromise if they wanted to stay together. Love is never an issue between these characters but learning to live together as a team is. I really enjoyed the internal conflict that Arthur set up for this couple and enjoyed how she tied their conflict into their friends' who were facing similar problems themselves. The book's mystery was well done providing the reader with many twists and turns. Overall Chasing the Shadows was a fabulous read that I would most definitely recommend if you enjoy intrigue, action, and romance with your paranormal. While I do think this book can be read as a standalone, I think reading the previous books would have added to the enjoyment. I look forward to reading another Nikki and Michael adventure. Received a copy of Chasing the Shadows through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. no reviews | add a review
