All I've read is The Sea, The Sea which I found intriguing, but the only reason I read it was that I was leading a book discussion group based on women's books that had won major prizes. Oh well, ... ... a very good series about that period of time leading up to partition. It is on my TB re-read list.
I started reading The Sea, The Sea, and it is around here somewhere . . . guess I should find it and pick it up again. Still on Iris Murdoch's The Sea, the Sea for my Murdoch reading group, *still* reading Edward Heath which feels like it'll never get finished (but will!) and in the middle of Daughters of Britannia which is a lovely read. I am reading The Sea The Sea by Iris Murdoch and enjoying it. Still plodding through Ivanhoe. Not sure, since it's still on my TBR pile (!), but is it The sea, the sea? I'm reading Iris Murdoch's The Sea, The Sea - a group of us are reading Murdoch's novels in order and we're on to a great sequence now. ... readings of IM then you MUST read A Severed Head which plays beautifully with Freud...
Let us know how you find The Sea The Sea - I and my Other Half are about to start reading it (re-reading in my case), me for my little online book group which is reading through all the books in ... So lovely to find a thread full of people who appreciate this amazing writer. I love The Sea, The Sea too but my all-time favourite is still The Bell which was my first IM book and was also beautifully televised back in the 1980s (I think). I'm not going to go into detail over why I love ... I'm not a huge Murdoch fan, but The Unicorn is a quick introduction to her work. I did like The Sea, The Sea too. Just to be different again, The Sea, The Sea was the one Murdoch that I've actively disliked. I never even tried to articulate the reason for myself. She certainly has other arrogant, needy protagonists, but I just couldn't stand Whateverhisnamewas. The one I read last was Henry and Cato, ... The Severed Head is classic mid period Murdoch, I'd also suggest The Bell or there's Booker winner The Sea The Sea ...

I have read a few others by IM - The Sea, The Sea (didn't enjoy it), A Word Child (can't remember much about it), The Green Knight and The Philospher's Pupil (thought they were fine) - and don't feel ... ... It's got me wondering now what title repeats itself three times?

Just finished Iris Murdoch's The Sea, The Sea which was a really strange, twisted read - an oddly compelling portrait of a neurotic megalomaniac and his warped views on love. I don't know how they pick ... Miss-Owl, The Sea, The Sea is *already* on Mt TBR!! I picked up a second hand copy at a wonderful bookshop last year. The only Iris Murdoch I've read so far is The Bell which is one of those books that does linger in your memory. In a good way. :)

My pace has slowed a bit in February due to "real life" events. But this book is nearly 500 pages so it would keep me busy for a while under any circumstances. I'm in a remote English seaside cottage with Charles Arrowby, a retired London theatre director. He likes to go bathing in The Sea, the Sea by Iris Murdoch. ... also like to add a vote for The Bell. I read it eighteen months ago or so and thought it was an excellent read. I bought The Sea, The Sea on the strength of it but haven't got round to reading it yet... ... precisely for its detail and alternative history, but know a few people who were put off by that.

aluva: I would recommend The Sea, The Sea or The Black Prince. I first read The Sea, The Sea about 5 years ago, and it really turned me on to Murdoch. Since then I've read about 6 or 7 of her books. These were probably the best two of those I've read, but I've enjoyed them all. The Sea, The S ... ... to the latter view this year, next year...Iris Murdoch presumably won it for a body of work, since it can't have been for The Sea, The Sea; Doris Lessing ought to. So should Anthony Burgess. (No surprises? No surprises. But that isn't the point of this sort of surprise!)"
Comments? The only Iris Murdoch novel I've read is The Sea, The Sea. I loved it and raved about it for weeks. My husband finally picked it up and now it's one of the books he consistently recommends to people. (We generally have very different tastes so this was a delight.)
I found the novel complex ... I own 5 Iris Murdoch's and have read but one An Unofficial Rose and recall liking it quite well. I've started The Sea, The Sea at least 4 or 5 times but it didn't grab me. She's one of those authors that I really want to like - so I'll try again. Especially now after Hera's raves!
