I also read Doctor Copernicus, which puzzled and ultimately disappointed me. I read The Untouchable last year, and was impressed by it, and I picked up this volume in a second hand shop here. World Ball Noteb ... ... yet. I have his Booker winner The Sea, but I haven't touched it yet. Have you read it? If so, how does it compare to The Untouchable? I have read elsewhere that some think that The Sea is not as good as his other books that were listed for the prize, namely The Book of Evidence and S ... #99 Bob and Doc, have you read Banville's The Untouchable? That is really spectacularly good. Banville writes exquisite prose.
Gift of rain looks excellent. Have you read Timothy Mo? Another excellent Asian/English writer who has somewhat dropped out of the picture, regrettably. ... problems. So far I'm enjoying it but the main ... I've left the Untouchable Anthony Blunt (oops, I mean Victor Maskell) in London. If that book doesn't make my top 5 for 2009, I'll be shocked.

Ooh - I really enjoyed Miranda Carter's book about Anthony Blunt. Didn't realise The untouchable was based on him.

It's quite a while since I read it but I remember being chilled by the icy, unemotional central character. You might be too young to remember when the one-time Surveyor of the Queen (of England)s Pictures was exposed as a Soviet ... ... wonderful Tintin books, e.g. The Black Island, The Calculus Affair. More recently there's John Banville's The Untouchable based on Cambridge spy Anthony Blunt - I've only read excerpts of it, but it's been on my wishlist for years.
