... eighteen year old Bakha, a "sweeper" in charge of cleaning three rows of public latrines on the edge of his town. He is an Untouchable. Bakha starts his day working "earnestly, quickly, without loss of effort". He dreams of the day he will be able to do the work of his father, the head of ...

#16 scrpo1027 > Sorry for the long wait! Been out of town for a bit! And to answer your question: - Yes, I gobbled up Untouchable by Kresley Cole the minute I had it unwrapped! That is why it took me forever to finnish Covet. Also in the same shipment was Ward's Insider's guide to BDB. SO ...

... fun! Will be interested to see how you like The Revolutions Trilogy because a) I own it and b) I loved Banville's The Untouchable. I've packed the trilogy into a storage box though so can't read it till we get back in a few years... it didn't make the final cut for books moving with ...

... Conte 4 3. The World at Night by Alan Furst 3 1/2 2. South of the Border, West of the Sun by Haruki Murakami 3 1. The Untouchable by John Banville 5

... Interesting and clever technique. I also read Doctor Copernicus, which puzzled and ultimately disappointed me. I read The Untouchable last year, and was impressed by it, and I picked up this volume in a second hand shop here. Banville's evocation of the late medieval world seems to consist ...

Here's my list... I've left the book numbers in in case you want to look at my thread for more comments. 1. The Untouchable by John Banville 7. All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque 6. The View from Castle Rock by Alice Munro 11. The Lost Traveller by Antonia White ...

... Cert English years ago. I haven't read The Sea because it just looks offputting and has never grabbed me, but I read The Untouchable by Banville earlier this year and thought it was fantastic.

... Graham Greene and I think we have The End of the Affair here somewhere... but maybe I'll pick something else. I read The Untouchable by John Banville earlier this year and loved it. It's based on Anthony Blunt's life. The Sea has always looked hard to get into, but so did The Untoucha ...

Murr, I bought The Untouchable at City Lights Bookstore, it looks good. Surprisingly, the store had no books by Timothy Mo (or Amos Oz, SqueakyChu). I'll look for their books at Black Oak Books in Berkeley later this week.

... yet. I have his Booker winner The Sea, but I haven't touched it yet. Have you read it? If so, how does it compare to The Untouchable? I have read elsewhere that some think that The Sea is not as good as his other books that were listed for the prize, namely The Book of Evidence and S ...

#99 Bob and Doc, have you read Banville's The Untouchable? That is really spectacularly good. Banville writes exquisite prose. Gift of rain looks excellent. Have you read Timothy Mo? Another excellent Asian/English writer who has somewhat dropped out of the picture, regrettably.

... problems. You've got me interested in this Acheson bio. But then again, I haven't even read the last book you sold me on- The Untouchable.

... it laying on a shelf (not even in the religion section). I am glad I found it. I just stopped by your thread and added The Untouchable to by TBR mountain.

CMT - Thanks for the review on The Untouchable sent to TBR Nation.

My best 3 in January were: The Untouchable by John Banville All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque and The View from Castle Rock by Alice Munro.

Oh Cushla, I utterly loved The Untouchable - it's by far my favourite Banville, and that's saying a lot for me! But I can also recommend the Revolutions Trilogy... I also concur on the Murakami, so I now officially deem you a kindred spirit. Well, let's see. I think I have a copy ...

I have The Untouchable on a list somewhere. I'll have to see if I can get to it this year. The mention of Alan Furst reminds of of how circular and never-ending this book thing is. I have, on yet another list, recommendations from authors I like. He gave a thumbs-up to Dawn Powell. I've ...

I read The Madonnas of Leningrad at the end of December and have just finished The Untouchable today. Thrin, if you're out there,THANK YOU for nudging it. I am very tired from staying up too late the last 3 nights reading it. It was awesome. If anyone else has it on their TBR piles, move ...

... I have yet to figure out any kind of goals or plan for the year, but will add them to the top post when I do. Book #1: The Untouchable by John Banville 5 stars. I loved this book and couldn't put it down for 4 days and nights. I'm confident that it'll make my top 5 for the year. I ...

Finished The Untouchable by John Banville this morning - loved it. Now I'm reading South of the Border, West of the Sun for the Reading Globally Japan read. My husband's a huge fan of Murakami's and thought this'd be his most accessible novel. So far I'm enjoying it but the main ...

I've left the Untouchable Anthony Blunt (oops, I mean Victor Maskell) in London. If that book doesn't make my top 5 for 2009, I'll be shocked. Am now in Tokyo following Hajime to university in South of the Border, West of the Sun by Murakami for the Japan read. Am enjoying it so far, I ...

... - very moving and highly recommended, especially if you have a loved one who's had Alzheimer's. Now I'm reading The Untouchable by John Banville. It's so good that I'm going to turn the computer off very soon!

Happy new year everyone! It's the end of Jan 1 here. I would be reading The Untouchable by John Banville if I weren't marking exam scripts at 9.00 in the office...

Am back from Leningrad. I'm now in London with a thinly disguised Anthony Blunt (Victor Maskell) in The Untouchable by John Banville. Why have I waited till now to read this booK!? If it stays this good, it'll be getting 5 stars.

... Conte 4 3. The World at Night by Alan Furst 3 1/2 2. South of the Border, West of the Sun by Haruki Murakami 3 1. The Untouchable by John Banville 5

Ooh - I really enjoyed Miranda Carter's book about Anthony Blunt. Didn't realise The untouchable was based on him. You guys are not making this easier but you are all increasing the chances that I spend more time reading! (I'm meant to be writing lecture notes right now but obviously am ...

John Banville's The Untouchable is a very particular sort of book. It's quite a while since I read it but I remember being chilled by the icy, unemotional central character. You might be too young to remember when the one-time Surveyor of the Queen (of England)s Pictures was exposed as a Soviet ...

... wonderful Tintin books, e.g. The Black Island, The Calculus Affair. More recently there's John Banville's The Untouchable based on Cambridge spy Anthony Blunt - I've only read excerpts of it, but it's been on my wishlist for years.

I'm reading The Untouchable by John Banville, but have also picked up Curtain by Agatha Christie. I really want to get to Firmin asap too, as it has been highly recommended by two book friends. OTOH....I want to get to The Waves by Virginia Woolf asap too......drat!

Cateline in Books Compared : Goethe/Nabokov (Apr 2, 2007, 9:36am)

... I have to percolate a review, but for now let it suffice it to say it is well worth the read. I've been reading The Untouchable by Banville but have been interrupted somewhat. But to keep this on topic, I really would only compare Banville's use of language to Nabokov, not ...

I bought The Robber Bride by Atwood and The Untouchable by John Banville today from 2nd hand bookstore.
