At school, Violet is very shy and often wishes she could disappear--especially when her classmate Irwin picks on her. At home and with her best friend Opal, she is theatrical and loud. One day, Violet's teacher announces that her class will be performing a play about the solar system and that everyone will have a part. Violet panics initially, but then she learns that her teacher has cast her in a special role that allows her to perform from offstage. Violet shines in her role as Lady Space and upstages Irwin who forgets his lines.

This book explores the challenges of being a shy child in school and being teased by other students. Having been a child with a lot of social anxiety, I found Violet's character very relatable. Cari Best does a great job of showing that shy children are often very different at home and with their close friends than they are in the classroom. This book teaches empathy and encourages children to be kind to one another. I would highly recommend this book to elementary school teachers. The illustrations are fun, as well. ( )

I kind of wish that someone had stepped in on Violet's behalf in this story rather than leaving her on her own with Irwin who was a real slug of a character. On the other hand, this was a satisfying end to the story as well. Though Irwin is going to keep being a pest and curiously, it's up to Violet to handle it. ( )

Violet has an allergic reaction to attention, helped along by her rude classmate Irwin. She avoids the spotlight and appears to be on the verge of breaking out in hives. Slowly, with the help of friends and her teacher, Violet regains her confidence and shines in her own spotlight. ( )

A very shy student, Violent, was in Mrs. Maxwell's class and she got the lead role of Lady Space in the call play about the solar system. During the play she helped the class bully, Irwin, with his lines even though he picks on her during class. In the end she realizes it's okay not to be shy.
This book is a good model how you should be nice to everyone and that it's okay to be shy but you can overcome it if you would like. ( )
