Adroit, lightning fast and hard to hit all aptly describe James Ellroy's "Because the Night," an early novel in his oeuvre. Filled from beginning to end with noir surroundings and hard-boiled detective work Mr. Ellroy's main character, Lloyd Hopkins, must piece together and then take apart a very intricate, well laid and sadistic puzzle initiated by a brilliant, if otherwise insane, evil genius. My only negative criticism of the novel is that Mr. Ellroy seems to be holding back in this early work whereas in his later novels, he punches you square in the jaw and leaves you reeling for more. Nevertheless, "Because the Night" is an excellent and engrossing novel and one hard-boiled aficionados should pick up. ( )
