Jennifer Ashley begins a promising new series about a group of death magic fighters called Immortals. Adrian is the oldest and is on a 700 year long quest to find his brother, Tain, who was captured by a powerful demon, an Old One. Following the demon, he comes across Amber who is investigating the death of her sister, Susan. Susan’s death appears to be linked to Tain and Amber might be the key to finding him. Paranormal romance, by definition, involves occurances that are very different from present-time day-to-day life. Sometimes, the need to create another reality and incorporate jargon that is unfamiliar to the reader ends up being the downfall of the story. Ashley expertly builds her mythology in a way that draws the reader in instead of confusing her. By incorporating common knowledge of creatures such as vampires, werewolves, witches, and shape-shifters, and only tweaking the characteristics of these creatures in minor ways, the story is both understandable and different enough from other paranormal tales to not feel derivative. It’s obvious (at least to me) that she’s been influenced by popular media such as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and probably Nora Roberts’ recent forays into paranormal romance, with witty dialogue, and believable, heartfelt characters. I’m glad I gave this series a chance, and have immediately either ordered or wish-listed the rest of the books that follow. Of note: Four of the other books in this 8-book (so far, I’m not sure it’s finished) collection are written by authors besides Jennifer Ashley. I am interested to see whether they will be able to maintain the quality and integrity of this book. The Calling really sets a standard. This is the first in the series The Immortals. This book penned by Jennifer Ashley is about the paranormal world. The story starts out with a witch (Amber) who goes to the warehouse where her sister was murdered by a Demon. While there she is confronted by the same demon who killed her sister. He intends on killing her next. Out of nowhere Adrian an Immortal jumps in and rescues Amber. The story revolves around Adrian looking for his lost brother for over 700 years. Amber helps him look and the become entangled in many adventurous battles along with falling madly in love with each other. It is a good story, I liked the characters especially Valerian. This series is written by different authors. They each wrote a book for the series. I enjoyed the writing style of Jennifer Ashley and will look forward to reading more of her work. Recommended reading for paranormal- paranormal erotica fans. Immortal warriors, demons, vampires, werewolves and witches abound in this mystery/urban fantasy/paranormal romance. When Amber's beloved sister is murdered she is determined to find the demon who did it. However, things don't go as planned and instead of discovering the murderer, she almost becomes his next victim. Her savior is the immortal Adrian who is on his own quest to locate his missing brother. A shared desire for retribution soon becomes more as Amber and Adrian are forced to consider how much their individual quests really mean to them in the face of an evil that could destroy the world. I've read a great deal of paranormal romance series over the last few years and I would say that this particular title is a very good representative of the genre. With a wide variety of supernatural creatures to fit every taste and an interesting yet non-complex storyline I think it definitely has an appeal for those fans of urban fantasy looking for something with a little "more" in the relationshippy/bedroom scene department without getting in to the more erotic writing that seems to have a love/hate following. The characters were well developed (although maybe a little cliché for those of us who have read a lot of books in this genre) and the side characters made for nice interludes in the action/romance. Certainly a title I'd recommend, particularly for newbies who might want to try out this type of tale. no reviews | add a review

It's a good start to the series, enjoyable and light, pretty predictable if you know the genre but not as annoying as some others in the genre. ( )
