Fiction. Literature. HTML:

Whether these are the written transcripts of dreams or deadly accurate maps of the tremor zones of our psyche, all seven stories in this collection implicate us in the most fearful ways imaginable. In one, a two-timing pornographer becomes the unwilling object in the fantasies of one of his victims. In another, a jaded millionaire buys himself the perfect mistress and plunges into a hell of jealousy and despair. In another, over the course of a weekend, a guilt-ridden father with his teenage daughter discovers the depths of his own blundering innocence.

This probably would have been very provocative in the late 1970s when it was written, but having been raised in the "Dan-Savage-sex on the interwebs" era I have to say the stories come off a bit quaint rather than thought provoking. That is not to say that they were not well written or didn't reflect the new ideas about sexuality and marriage and relationships. I just think The Woman Who Gave Birth to Rabbits by Emma Donoghue did a better job of that. But this book WAS written in 1978.

I'd actually give this 3.5. It's not as succinct as First Love, Last Rites, but still very enjoyable and classic Macabre. ( )

McEwan can write, that is for sure. This was just a very odd application of that talent. Eash of these stories is quite unsettling in some way. The tales all have quite an explicit element. There isquite a bot of ambiguity here, at times you feel that you're looking at the characters through a windown of smokey glass. If you're of a sensitive disposition, you may find some of these rather upsetting. I can't say I reccomend this piece of his writing, but I finished it nonetheless. ( )

McEwan aims for the sacred and the stunted in this kit bag of the abnormal. Half of the stories were wonderful and the others felt plastic and abortive. ( )

O'Byrne atravesó a pie el mercado del Soho hasta la tienda de su hermano, en Brewer Street. Un puñado de clientes hojeaba las revistas, y Harold los observaba a través de unas gafas de culo de vaso desde su tarima, en un rincón.
