With the government's new 'open-book' policy about its past dealings, it has come to light that eighteen years ago a hundred pregnant women were exposed to a chemical that has altered the DNA of their children. In order to discover just how these children have been affected a program has been set up to bring these children together and over the course of a few short week, test and observe these children for any abnormalities. So far the results are inconclusive.

Apart from the fact that every teenager affected by this chemical is good looking, there seems to be nothing too out of the ordinary about the group. At least as far as Clio and her new friends are concerned. That is of course until the 'stars' are exposed and a number of sinister and dark secrets about the campus staff is revealed. With so many questions and strange abilities presenting themselves, Clio and her friends go looking for answers but what they get is a deadly stand-off.

Solid brings together a hundred seventeen-year-olds to a secret and secure campus where they can be informed, monitored and tested on any abnormal traits or abilities they may possess. The cause of all this, a drug known as C9x that has affected the very 'solidity' of these teenagers' beings. As a result superhuman abilities are experienced as is rule breaking, secrets, lies, dancing, stars, romance, murderous soldiers and unshakable friendships. A series debut that's unique subject matter makes this a highly engrossing read. ( )

Good book! I loved the idea for this story and was curious to read about the abilities of the genetically altered teens. This was a quick read and a good introduction to the characters. I would have liked to know more about the experiment, how it affected each character and more about their new powers so am hoping that will come in the next book! ( )

When I first read the description of this book I was intrigued. At first it made me think of the X-Men franchise. I have to say Shelley soon got that thought right out of my head upon starting this book. Calliope "Clio" Kaid travels to New Jersey from New Orleans to an isolated campus to find out what exactly C9x is and what that means to them. C9x is the whole reason behinds the kids super-human abilities. While Clio is there she meets Jack, Bliss, Garrett, Miranda, and eventually Alexis. They become fast friends and eventually become something like the Scooby-Doo Gang. The kids soon discover that this is not the "open-book military" that they were lead to believe. Instead they are there for a more sinister and diabolical purpose. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and was very impressed by Shelley's knowledge of the military and the science behind the kids transformations. Even though there is a romance between Clio and Jack it is not the focal point of this whole book is about which is kind of refreshing. What I also enjoyed was the fact that there were not too many characters that I needed to wonder how they fit into this story or why are they even in this story. Shelley made C9x the core of her story and she did not let it fall by the way side. She made sure we, as the reader, were enthralled by the C9x experiment and the cloak and dagger secrecy of what the military is keeping from the kids. I think everyone who reads this book will enjoy it as much as I did. On a scale of 1-10 I give this book a 10. I am so on the look out for Settling (Solid book 2). ( )

I really like the premise of this novel; it's something a little different, while it still has all those things we love about YA paranormal. Shelley does a great job introducing us to her characters and this new situation with which they are faced. Her writing is fun and easy and the pacing is spot on. I enjoyed the story from start to finish, and it was a fairly quick read.

I am definitely looking forward to learning more about the characters and their abilities in the rest of the series. Jack is such a sweetheart, and the turn of events involving Alexis was really exciting. I am dying to see how the relationships that began in book one play out through the following installments.

This is a great introduction to the series, and I am eager to get my hands on book two! ( )

The army has released information of one of their doctors experimenting on unborn children. He had given about 100 mothers tainted vitamins to alter their children with secret abilities. Now the army is trying to figure out what all the children can do and how to help them live with their new abilities.

Clio is one of the teenagers. When she gets to the camp for the teenagers, she finds that the army has spared no expense for them. They packed up the teen’s rooms at home and set up the rooms exactly as they were to make them feel more comfortable. Clio quickly meets four other kids and makes fast friends. She learns that there are three main groups; the athletes, the heavies or the goth kids, and the rest. The Jack, the guy that Clio has an instant crush on, is a floater. No one really knows what his abilities are so he floats between the groups to see where he belongs.

One day while Clio is resting, she over hears a conversation that gets her to think that something far different is going on. When she brings her suspicions up to her new friends, they go on a fact-finding mission.

I really liked this book. I got sucked in with the prolog and couldn’t wait to learn what abilities they kid’s would have. The interactions between characters was really good, especially the heavies and their moodiness. I liked how the book ended with the opening for more books to come. I cannot wait to get Settling. If you like young adult stories you will love this book.

I received this book for free from a giveaway and promised the author an honest review. ( )
