Once again, never disappointed. A heart wrenching kick ass type of book. ( )

The plot of this story made no sense whatsoever and none of the baddies/suspects seemed to have thought through any of their actions to their logical conclusion. I am uncomfortable with the sort of violent rampage that occurred at the end, although I think it was meant to be admirable. ( )

My mom bought this for me a few years ago and I finally got around to reading it. I've never read Lisa Gardner before so I don't know what is considered a 'typical' style for her, but I genuinely enjoyed the alternating perspectives of D.D. Warren and Tessa Leoni. It worked for me from a style and narrative perspective.

The general theme of the book is parenthood and the lengths a parent would go to if their child was threatened. It works well, playing Tessa's love for her daughter Sophie off of D.D.'s discovery of her own unplanned pregnancy. Tessa blooms as the story goes on, her first person narration doesn't feel tired in comparison to D.D's more stoic third person, and by the end I was eager to read more stories about her.

The plot itself laid out nicely, unraveling quickly enough to pull you along but at a satisfying pace.

A well-deserved 7.7/10 (rounded up for GR) ( )

Amazing again!! Just when you think you know what's happening she twists the plot on you and sends you off in another direction only to yank you back on to another path before dragging you back into your original line but throwing in a bunch of details you missed on your way through!! This one was a wild ride!! ( )

Dedication
This book is dedicated in loving memory to Uncle Darrell and Aunt Donna Holloway, who taught us laughter, love and, of course, cribbage strategy.

Also, to Richard Myles, aka Uncle Dick, whose love of great books, beautiful gardens, and a good Manhattan will not be forgotten.

We love you, and we remember.

Book description
One question, a split-second decision, and Brian Darby lies dead on the kitchen floor. His wife, state police trooper Tessa Leoni, claims to have shot him in self-defense, and bears the bruises to back up her tale. For veteran detective D. D. Warren it should be an open-and-shut case. But where is their six-year-old daughter?

As the homicide investigation ratchets into a frantic statewide search for a missing child, D. D. Warren must partner with former lover Bobby Dodge to break through the blue wall of police brotherhood, seeking to understand the inner workings of a trooper’s mind while also unearthing family secrets. Would a trained police officer truly shoot her own husband? And would a mother harm her own child?

For Tessa Leoni, the worst has not yet happened. She is walking a tightrope, with nowhere to turn, no one to trust, as the clock ticks down to a terrifying deadline. She has one goal in sight, and she will use every ounce of her training, every trick at her disposal, to do what must be done. No sacrifice is too great, no action unthinkable. A mother knows who she loves. And all others will be made to pay.
