One reviewer described "Target in the Night" as a detective story that isn't really a detective story. It is certainly true that reducing the work to a detective story is a great injustice and, indeed, not accurate. There is a mystery here but only as a framework on which hangs the complexity of its characters and life as a whole. The novel is truthful, unique and wonderfully written. The novel and its characters grapple (not always successfully) with the workings of the life they find themselves in. A very smart and thoughtful book that really shouldn't be missed by any serious reader.
