This is a very good, if somewhat scattered history of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition in the years just before World War I, with particular emphasis on the amazing survival epic of the expedition's leader, Douglas Mawson. Mawson's story is often unfairly overshadowed by Shackleton and Scott, but Roberts does a fine job in attempting to rectify that. ( )
