She's done an excellent job of getting a good mix of plot, character building and humor with just a taste of sex. Love the fact that the story is the main focus again and not the sex. A little light on the climax this time... it almost feels as if she were in a hurry to finish the story. Overall a good showing from LKH. Not her best, but certainly a return from the BDSM-sex focused novels that have been the last couple books. Hoping this trend continues. ( )

I was so afraid this was going to be another book full of 20-page sex scenes. Fortunately, LKH has taken us back to the good old days of crime-solving and monster-killing. With only one sex scene, this book is the best Anita novel I've read in quite a while. Sex is fine, but it was beginning to be overdone.

My only complaint with this story is that the end was almost anti-climatic. Anita spends the whole book scared of the Mother, then in one sentence, pretty much out of nowhere, it all turns and before you realize it, it's all over and suddenly the Mother is gone forever. ( )

I started reading this and fell in love with LKH's writing and characters all over again, as I have done with every one of her books I have ever read. It's always so long between books as I'm always uptodate, so it has always been ages since I've read hers. As I said, I loved the beginning of this book and that is what makes me give it 4/5 stars. I'd already heard it was more old-style Anita, which I'm sure the prudish fans out there will rejoice at, and it is. It has an epic fight scene in it which I read with total awe.

The ending got interesting.. and then I realised I only had about four pages left of the book. There's only two things that can happen to a book when you realise that; cliffhanger or the ending feels rushed. It felt rushed and rather than enjoying it, I have been left with this annoying 'meh' feeling that I can't quite place. I can't lie, the end disappointed me. I wonder what will happen in the next book after that. ( )

too tidy, Glad there is more action, but she can't seem to find a balance between the action and character development. Guess at this poing all she can do is make Anita a God. ( )

The action occasionally bogs down in the sexual trysts Anita indulges in to stoke her supernatural abilities, but for the most part, Hamilton goes back to basics and delivers a sleek, hard-boiled page-turner.
