The strong and powerful opening movement is followed by the elegiac and yearning qualities of the slow movement and the wistful and enigmatic last movement – not going out with a bang but with an autumnal farewell. This is music to change the perceptions of those who think that Elgar was simply a Pomp and Circumstance composer.
