Slow start, but once the trip into the dreamlands starts the story grips you and never lets up until right at the end ( )

I still love this book. Tiffany Aching is one of my all time favourite witches. ( )

Other than Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, I'd never actually read any Pratchett before. Then my friend Genny bought this book for me. I ended up putting it on the bedtime story shelf and my thirteen-year-old picked it, but it ended up being one of those books that the whole family showed up for -- even my husband.

It was great fun to read, even with the challenge of trying to do a whole bunch of different Scottish voices. Tiffany is, of course, a fantastic character, and I can see why my friend Genny was enthusiastic enough to buy me a copy of this for no occasion at all. My husband was delighted to learn that there are more books in this series, so the next one is now sitting on our bedtime story shelf waiting to be chosen... ( )

Read this out loud to my kids, who are 9, 6, and 3 years old, and my mother, who is 67. And they all loved it. Pratchett is a genius, his humor is delightful, and his writing and especially characterization, is compelling. ( )

First words
Some things start before other things.
No wonder we dream our way through our lives. To be awake, and see it all as it really is ... no one could stand that for long.
Now ... if you trust in yourself ... and believe in your dreams ... and follow your star ... you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.
“Yes! I'm me! I am careful and logical and I look up things I don't understand! When I hear people use the wrong words, I get edgy! I am good with cheese. I read books fast! I think! And I always have a piece of string! That's the kind of person I am!”
“Zoology, eh? That's a big word, isn't it."

"No, actually it isn't," said Tiffany. "Patronizing is a big word. Zoology is really quite short.”
