It took me a little while to get through the Britishness of this book and actually find the story, but once I got that sorted out, the story was a lot of fun. This is the first Discworld book I've gotten all the way through (fizzled fifty pages in on The Colour of Magic awhile back) and I can start to see what all the hype is about. There were quite a handful of times when I laughed out loud with no one in the room to hear me (I am more prone to laughing aloud if I have an audience, I've discovered). The characters were fun and usually off from the stereotypes in just such a way that they were rather brilliant. I'll definitely pick up more of these. Thanks for the recommendation, Daniel!

I think that "Guards! Guards!" was and excellent book. The parodies of common events in adventure stories were well thought out, it fits in well with other books in the Discworld series, and... It's flat-out HILARIOUS!

I highly recommend it. Seriously. ( )

I've been quite remiss on my reviewing because of a full-time job, which has now ended. I actually finished this book some months ago and I did enjoy it -- the first Discworld book I read was Feet of Clay, another of the Watch thread, and, true to my love for police procedurals, I like to read about the Watch. I hereby crown this, my 8th Discworld read, the new king of the realm.

As usual, Pratchett delivers cartloads of general silliness and satire that boots mankind in the rear for our less than stellar habits. But two things particularly stood out for me. First, was how the loopy plot threads managed to weave themselves into a logical resolution (I suspect magic was required). And second, I adored the characters of the Night Watch. Especially the downtrodden Captain Vimes, who embodies how I imagine I might feel if I thought my daughters were going to fight every single day, for the rest of my life. Also loved the Captain's um...special pet, Errol, as well as Lady Ramkin, who raises swamp dragons.

For fans of the series: great use of the Librarian (Oook!), but only a smidgen of Death (DRAT!). ( )

Can't go wrong with Captain Sam Vimes, or Lady Sybil for that matter. Hilarious cast of characters. ( )

Epigraph
Dedication
They may be called the Palace Guard, the City Guard, or the Patrol. Whatever the name, their purpose in any work of heroic fantasy is identical: it is, round about Chapter Three (or ten minutes into the film) to rush into the room, attack the hero one at a time, and be slaughtered. No-one ever asks them if they wanted to.This book is dedicated to those fine men.
And also to Mike Harrison, Mary Gentle, Neil Gaiman and all the others who assisted with and laughed at the idea of L-space; too bad we never used Schrodinger's Paperback . . .

- "All by himself?" said the captain.

Book description
This is where the dragons went. They lie…not dead, not asleep, but…dormant. And although the space they occupy isn't like normal space, nevertheless they are packed in tightly. They could put you in mind of a can of sardines, if you thought sardines were huge and scaly. And presumably, somewhere, there's a key...

Here there be dragons...and the denizens of Ankh-Morpork wish one huge firebreather would return from whence it came. Long believed extinct, a superb specimen of draco nobilis ("noble dragon" for those who don't understand italics) has appeared in Discworld's greatest city. Here there be dragons . . . and the denizens of Ankh-Morpork wish one huge firebreather would return from whence it came. Long believed extinct, a superb specimen of draco nobilis ("noble dragon" for those who don't understand italics) has appeared in Discworld's greatest city. Not only does this unwelcome visitor have a nasty habit of charbroiling everything in its path, in rather short order it is crowned King (it is a noble dragon, after all . . .). Meanwhile, back at Unseen University, an ancient and long-forgotten volume -- The Summoning of Dragons -- is missing from the Library's shelves. To the rescue come Captain Vimes, Constable Carrot, and the rest of the Night Watch who, along with other brave citizens, risk everything, including a good roasting, to dethrone the flying monarch and restore order to Ankh-Morpork (before it's burned to a crisp). A rare tale, well done as only Terry Pratchett can.… (more)
