Work detailsGuards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett (1989)
I think that "Guards! Guards!" was and excellent book. The parodies of common events in adventure stories were well thought out, it fits in well with other books in the Discworld series, and... It's flat-out HILARIOUS! I highly recommend it. Seriously. I've been quite remiss on my reviewing because of a full-time job, which has now ended. I actually finished this book some months ago and I did enjoy it -- the first Discworld book I read was Feet of Clay, another of the Watch thread, and, true to my love for police procedurals, I like to read about the Watch. I hereby crown this, my 8th Discworld read, the new king of the realm. As usual, Pratchett delivers cartloads of general silliness and satire that boots mankind in the rear for our less than stellar habits. But two things particularly stood out for me. First, was how the loopy plot threads managed to weave themselves into a logical resolution (I suspect magic was required). And second, I adored the characters of the Night Watch. Especially the downtrodden Captain Vimes, who embodies how I imagine I might feel if I thought my daughters were going to fight every single day, for the rest of my life. Also loved the Captain's um...special pet, Errol, as well as Lady Ramkin, who raises swamp dragons. For fans of the series: great use of the Librarian (Oook!), but only a smidgen of Death (DRAT!). Can't go wrong with Captain Sam Vimes, or Lady Sybil for that matter. Hilarious cast of characters. no reviews | add a review Is contained inThe City Watch Trilogy: Guards! Here there be dragons . . . and the denizens of Ankh-Morpork wish one huge firebreather would return from whence it came. Long believed extinct, a superb specimen of draco nobilis ("noble dragon" for those who don't understand italics) has appeared in Discworld's greatest city. Not only does this unwelcome visitor have a nasty habit of charbroiling everything in its path, in rather short order it is crowned King (it is a noble dragon, after all . . .). Meanwhile, back at Unseen University, an ancient and long-forgotten volume -- The Summoning of Dragons -- is missing from the Library's shelves. To the rescue come Captain Vimes, Constable Carrot, and the rest of the Night Watch who, along with other brave citizens, risk everything, including a good roasting, to dethrone the flying monarch and restore order to Ankh-Morpork (before it's burned to a crisp). A rare tale, well done as only Terry Pratchett can.… (more)
