I think that the two things that capture him best are the scene in Men At Arms when he returns to the Fools' Guild having been given orders to leave in peace if they won't answer his questions readily and manages to give the impression that his orders were exactly the ... ... but there's a strain of ruthlessness in him that's worrisome. And his line of "Personal isn't the same as important" in Men at Arms is very telling.
I don't thing Angua is going to be happy with him in the long term. Right now I'm juggling rereads of Night Watch and Men at Arms and reading Guards! Guards! for the first time. Just finished Thud! yesterday!

Someone has stolen something from the assassin's guild, but they're not saying what. The head of the Night Watch, Captain Vimes, isn't really too worried about it - he's more worried about his upcoming wedding/retirement. Maybe the new recruits will find out ... I'm reading Men at Arms now, and I think I will start one of the teen ones, maybe The Bar Code Tattoo. Not sure yet. ... about the characters, so I put it away. Just not for me.

I loved it! It was refreshing to see so much of Carrot's point of view, though I do adore Sam Vimes (and we get plenty of him ... Men at Arms? Men at Arms there was a lot of King talk in that one. no night watch and men at arms are both wrong men at arms?
So technically I'm joint second...
:) ... Sarge bit was a little weak though and would have been better if he were just an understanding fatherly figure.

What, now you need the next Vimes book, and you really need to have Guards! Guards! before Men at Arms! I once again caved, and bought Men At Arms and Soul Music. I may need a Pratchett intervention. Like, now. I just finsihed Men at Arms not his very best, but one of my favourites.
I don't like Small Gods at all, although I know I'm in a minority here.
#48 you don't like Susan ?! - she's one of my favourite characters! I'm always surprised at the variety of responses to Terry's works. I found Equal Rites at the library book sale and snatched it up. Skip the first two Pratchetts. If I may suggest the book to start with.

Life Amongst the Modocs: Unwritten History by Joaquin ... ... it. I was hooked in an instant. Since then, I started reading all the Discworld books in release order and now just started Man at Arms, so I have a few (but many few more to go).
I actually have been in a "break" from Terry (after 14 book in a row) and now, with just some pages read, somehow I ... ... to get it and fall deeply in love with it and read the whole thing and it just wasn't happening. I finally finished reading Discworld: Men at Arms and quite enjoyed it but don't feel any urges yet to get any more (but thanks to to Reading Fox for the reading list #6, I will try to plan a bit ... I went to a church fete at the weekend and whilst my wife stocked up on chicklit I bought Men at Arms: a novel of discworld and a book about cricket ties whose name escapes me at the moment. I put down Doctor Zhivago to try again with Terry Pratchett. I've tried before with The colour of Ma ... You know, I was just starting to like trolls after my last Terry Pratchett book, Men at Arms: discworld. Somehow they are better when they are inarticulate. Maybe we need to raise the temperature somehow. Oh, no. That would be called Global Warming. Guess I'll just try to take clamairy's ... ... so I went back to Hogfather and re-read it. Been addicted ever since.
Favourite books so far include Reaper Man, Men at Arms : a novel of Discworld (man it's hard to get those touchstones straight), Jingo, and The Last Continent.
Nice to meet you all! I finally finished Life of Pi. Loved it.
Next in my fiction books will be Men at Arms Discworld. My daughter keeps bugging me to read all the Pratchetts we have so she can talk to me about them, but I want to read them slowly so I fully appreciate every one. ... of the Discworld Series and had also read the rest.
My personal favourites are the City Watch books (Guards, Guards, Men At Arms, and Feet of Clay). Needless to say, my favourite characters are the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, especially Sam Vimes.
