Depending on the ages of the kids - my husband and sons love Terry Pratchett's discworld series. I don't like it so much (I don't care for fantasy), but the guys think they are hilariously funny. Dark Hills, Hollow Clocks by G ... I finished Interesting Times (LOVED IT) and Behind the Screen (fun, now I'm going to increase my queue at Netflix). I've started The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexandar (is it my imagination, or is this a LOtR rip-off?) and The Silent Traveler in San Francisco by Yee Chiang. Having just finished reading Interesting Times, which I loved, and having recently watched the latest Indiana Jones movie, this thought leaped out at me. Why not cast Harrison Ford as Cohen the Barbarian? His accent wouldn't matter, why not have an American barbarian? Most of the world thinks we ... ... put down a very poorly written book the other day, so to get the bad taste out of my mouth I decided to read a Pratchett. Interesting Times

T ... Just re-read Soul Music, not for the first time. I actually stopped buying his books round about Interesting Times, but I was a loyal follower up to then.
While we`re waiting for someone to join in, here`s one from a book I re-read recently, Interesting times by Terry Pratchett -

A division of the spoils by Paul Scott ... people towards other Discworld books slowly until they start to devour them on their own... Of course, I started with Interesting Times and I prefer the later books, so take my suggestion with a bit of a grain of salt. (On the other hand as a large Sci-Fi reader I have a hard time not ... ... all of the books just get better and better as you go.
Absolute favorite books: The Fifth Elephant, The Truth, Interesting Times, Witches Abroad, Small Gods, and Night Watch...
I do recommend reading the books of each mini-series in order, although I agree with reading_fox ... My first was The Colour of Magic and I've been reading them in publication order since then.
I have bought Interesting times but not read it yet. ... and listing more than ONE, my other least favourite contenders are
Colour of magic (discworld novel), light fantastic, interesting times, and the last continent. Although none get less than 3 stars too.
I know many people who do really like Small gods, but I just don't find it that ... I started with Interesting Times then Maskerade. I can't remember if or how many people had recommended the books at that time, but I do remember those two books in particular had stood apart from the rest of the Sci-Fi/Fantasy shelves at the time. For the most part since I've followed Harper' ... ... characters of the main series -es. (What's the plural of series? serii?)
Anyway, my two favorite are Small Gods and Interesting Times. When I met Pratchett at a book signing, I asked him about the use of chaos theory in those books, and he recommended a work by an English scientist who ... ... person had recommended it. I'm often getting great suggestions from magazines such as Hornbook. But then I remember Interesting Times and I think it might be that one. In any event, I went Hogfatherwild. There is hardly anything I don't like about them. And as I did not read them in ... ... and we shared our collection-- one would buy one and we'd read it, then the other would buy the next one. All the way up to Interesting Times, at which point she went to college and swapping the books became too difficult, logistically. ... Discworld books, and still have about 8 to read. I have enjoyed them all so far, but my favorites were Small Gods, Interesting Times and Reaper Man.
My favorite characters are Vetanari, The Luggage, The Librarian, and Death.
I read them out of order, and my plan some day is to ... ... The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove is probably my favorite.
Terry Pratchett is good too - I like Small Gods and Interesting Times.
David Sedaris is funny too, but I prefer listening to him on audio books rather than reading him.
