The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic were Pratchett's first two Discworld books before Pratchett realized there really WAS a Discworld. They are straight parodies of the fantasy genre. In The Colour of Magic , the first novella is set in a sword and sorcery setting, the second is more Lo ...
47. The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett (**)
Meh. It just didn't do it for me. Unfortunately, this book has been recommended to me so many times by well-meaning friends who know of my love of absurd British humor that it couldn't possibly live up to the hype. It suffers from The Hithhiker's Gu ...
Home for Christmas and thus reading my mother's books. Just tried the first Discworld, The Color of Magic , and never got into it at all. Fortunately, I have already read four of the later books in the series and thus know that it gets better.

Another fun Discworld book. This is my favorite, so far, of the books starring Rincewind. It's a lot funnier than The Color of Magic or The Light Fantastic. Also, the Luggage plays a big role in this book, and I absolutely adore the Luggage. Funny, light, escape reading. Four stars.

Lords and Ladies was one of my favorites too, but I loved Wyrd Sisters even more. We got the DVD of The Color of Magic and now my 12 year old is a Discworld fan. He listened to the audio of it as well and of Eric.

#59 Small Gods by Terry Pratchett
I am enjoying the Discworld books more and more. A friend of mine read The Color of Magic but could not get interested. Then she realised how many books there are in the series and decided not to read anymore. I told her, as I tell you, that all the ...
... that, particularly with the later books, you do get more out of them if you have. My problem with that is that, for me, The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic (the first two) aren't the best and you may be put off. That said, there are others who do like them the most, so... M ...
I started at the beginning The colour of magic . The fun part of starting at the beginning, is that you see the development of the series and several characters (Rincewind, Granny Weatherwax). Finished The Color of Magic today. Pretty enjoyable. Strongly reminded me of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy--satire with a huge helping of absurdity. I may read more Discworld books, if I get in the mood for light and fluffy reading.
Next up: I'm not sure. I'll probably keep to ...
Well, I gave in to the temptation to hurry up my TBR reading and started The Color of Magic . My copy is 183 pages long and I'm already up to page 150 or so. Once I'm finished with that (hopefully today or this weekend at least), I'll only be two books behind the one-book-a-month pace. I know ...

It had been a long time since I'd visited Discworld, and after hanging out around here enough, I was eager to go back again, and ...
... that I half of the books that I have read have been Terry Pratchett books. Anyway, I want to eventually go back and read The Colour of Magic because I just watched the movie on Netflix and really enjoyed it.
I'll second that; The Colour of Magic is a dud.
I think that the Witches series is the easiest to start with but don't bother with Equal Rites to start with, like The Colour of Magic it is a bit different. I think that Wyrd Sisters is the first proper witch one...
Mort is the first ...

fairy-whispers, don't read the Discworld series in order, because the first (The Colour of Magic ) is, frankly, a bit of a dud. I'd recommend one of the early Death ones - Mort is the first, I think - or one of the first with the Guard - would that ...

I agree with you about The Colour of Magic . It doesn't seem to fit in with the other books and it is the only one of Pratchett's books which I don't re-read every so often.
I tried to start with The Color of Magic but just couldn't get into it so I put aside Pratchett's novels for months before deciding to try again. This time I started with Monstrous Regiment and basically got hooked and I haven't look back since.
... I'm thinking maybe I'll substitute an "All Aboard" category for the Discworld one. On the other hand, I did read and enjoy The Color of Magic , and I'd love to read the rest of the series...argh, I can't decide! Thoughts?
If I do decide to change categories, here are the books I'm thinking of ...

I've just started The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett. Pratchett's Discworld series was recommended to me for its humor. I am a little apprehensive as everyone who reads Pratchett tells me that it is not good to start with the first book he wrote in the series. Of course, no one is in ...

The Colour of Magic is an early Discworld book by Terry Pratchett. IMO if you want to read Discworld skip the first two, they have a different feel to the later books.
I had the same reaction to The Color of Magic but have not yet gone on to the next in the series. I hate to give up on Pratchett since so many people here on LT rave about his books. I'll try again someday.
#37 Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett
This was definately and introductory book. I can see the potential in the series, but this book was not great. I am sure I will read a couple more, since so many rave about it. I am sure there is something there. I liked Good Omens so I know the ...

85. Terry Pratchett, Colour of magic
Caspettee, I adore Terry Pratchett! I've only read a few of his books (The Colour of Magic , Mort, Reaper Man), but I'm working on Soul Music right now. It's becoming a bit of an addiction, I think. :)

flissp is right. The Color of Magic and The Light Fantastic were written as satire on specific fantasy stereotypes, so that each section of the first book, for example, is a takeoff on a different type of fantasy. This means they are parodies that by their nature are episodic. What happened ...

I was restrained today - The Colour of Magic for Mum, to start filling in the gaps in her Discworld series, and a few books to add to our 'dream bookshop' stockpile... and just ONE for myself: Memnoch the Devil by Anne Rice. Incredibly, I just wasn't in the mood!
Terry Pratchett's Discworld books would fit that description.

10. The Color of Magic , Terry Pratchett
This is my first Pratchett book which, coincidentally, is the first Discworld book Pratchett wrote (in 1983). Boy, was it fun, even though all of the Pratchett experts say the next two dozen or so are much better than this one.
But I have an odd quirk: ...

Well - give it a try. There was lots of funny stuff in The Colour of Magic , and Pratchett introduces characters that we see more of as we go, so it's important to have some character study I suppose. It's just that I didn't think there was much of a plot. But it's short....!

The Colour of Magic by Terry Pratchett in Rincewind the Wizzard
I started Rincewind the Wizzard last week, and finished The Colour of Magic . For my first Terry Pratchett, it was OK. I've started The Light Fantastic. I will certainly finish off the 4 books in this omnibus, and probably try another Pratchett series.

Well, though I am a serious fan of Pratchett, I don't care for The Colour of Magic . We were just discussing the various "series" in the Discworld books and how people like one but not the other, while others feel vice-versa.

The thing about Color of Magic is that it's not really representative of the series as a whole. And the newer books absolutely blow my mind . . . I tend to recommend Guards! Guards! as a starter, or else Wyrd Sisters, the latter especially for Shakespeare fans. Color of Magic I think ...
mpramanik - Just be patient with Discworld. If you don't love Colour of Magic , try Guards!, Guards! or one of the other beginnings to a series within the series. Then if you don't like it, perhaps it isn't your thing. I really loved Color of Magic though.
And welcome!

The Colour of Magic is a really unpolished discworld book. It's not a good one to judge by, even for people who like the Rincewind books, which include me.

I read The Colour of Magic about 6 months ago after Terry Pratchett was reccomended to me. I enjoyed it but also need to go in order so haven't read anymore. I bought a dozen of his books at a garage sale but they sit unread until I get The Light Fantastic out of the library. The thing that ...
Good Omens made me want to read more by Gaiman and Pratchett. I have to agree that colour of magic isn't the one that will get you hooked, though.
I can't remember exactly when I first met Pratchett, but I did start with The Colour of Magic first, which happened to be in a bookcase at home. Years later my then-girlfriend (now wife) and I picked up a couple of other ones, and then we were hooked. My favorite characters are the Witches, the ...

Good choices you have there, though--I'm right in the middle of 1984 on audiobook, and soon I should get through the Colour of Magic , too. (The touchstone demands a British spelling.. it must go by the work name, since there are plenty of copies in the system with the American spelling.)

Thanks for the recommendation.

The reason most people warn against starting with The Colour of Magic is that, though it set the groundwork for the rest of the series, it isn't consistent with the other books. A lot of early ideas and material was ...
