Not quite as funny as some of the other Discworld books. this one takes on Holy Wood. It's fun, but not roll on the floor laughing fun. I liked Gaspode the Wonder Dog and I love the Librarian, so I was happy that he had a part in this one.

I just finished Terry Pratchett's Moving Pictures and now I'm reading Equal Rites by the same author. I have no idea what I'm going to reread next. I'm starting Moving Pictures now. All the Holy Wood allusions are great fun. Favorite silly thing right now is "Final Frontier" Not much of a frontier if there is nowhere to go after that. :) Paraphrased, of course. 16. Well, that wraps up January, I finished Moving Pictures on the 31st. 16 is pretty respectable, considering all the flying around the country and starting a new semester I did. I won't be able to maintain it though, I have too much reading to do for school. I still have a ... ...

Equally, if you haven't seen many films, Moving Pictures can be kind of a dead loss! I realise however that some themes are fairly universal, e.g. death ;-)
I know lots of people suggest Mort as a starting ... ... isn't up there with his best but particular joys that spring to mind are Night Watch and Jingo: a Discworld novel.
Moving pictures was another great.
I could go on here so I'll round off with a mention for two of his "young adult" books, The wee free men and A Hat Full of Sky.
... ... Or how about Dogsbody by Diana Wynne Jones?
My favourite fictional dog, though, is Gaspode the Wonder Dog from Moving Pictures by Terry Pratchett, also making frequently recurring appearances in the Discworld books after that... ... Heaven and Hell by John Jakes
The Battle Cry of Freedom by James McPherson
Star Trek: New Frontier by Peter David
Moving Pictures by Terry Pratchett
Bullfinch's Mythology
Okay, that's eleven. And I'm sure I'm forgetting some, so this list is always on the fluid side. ^_^ #11 - yes, you just did ;-)
I felt that the proportion of "weirdness" between real life LA and Moving Pictures is the same as for, say, real life faculty and the wizards of Unseen University... But that's just me, eh?
#12 - Yes, I enjoy Night Watch for the same reasons that you do, Stringcat ... *picture me with really big eyes!*
I just LOVE Moving Pictures for the Hollywood parody! It could have been that my reading it coincided closely with me actually staying in LA, but in my view it's quite right on target...
Good thing tastes differ :-) ... How can ya go wrong adapting what Shakespeare stole from others. (Midsummer Night's Dream for those not familiar.)
Moving Pictures and Wintersmith are real close together as far as bad goes. MP for being truly forced and WS for being too, "OO! Paint my room pink!" ... now I'll say Jingo
(there are actually seven contenders to this one; which I enjoy most depends on mood - Small Gods, Moving Pictures, Night watch, Reaper Man, Feet of Clay (Discworld), Soul Music and Witches Abroad)
Least: Going Postal (Discworld)
*edited when I saw how ... ... although there's a definite tie-in with the City Watch books, as the focus is on completely new characters. Pyramids and Moving Pictures are two others I see as being particularly fine examples of stand-alones.
My own personal favourites have changed over the years. At first it was Death, ... ...
There are plenty of stand-alone books in there too - try Going Postal for a giggle at the expense of the Postal Service; Moving Pictures for a crack at the film industry; or Pyramids for an escapade in a land not unlike ancient Egypt and some fun with an unwilling assassin…
And if the D ... ... are smelly... amongst other things!
I don't remember the first appearance of the imps, but they have a crucial part in Moving pictures, which happens to be one of my favourites... ... For example:
Shakespeare fan: Wyrd Sisters
Music fan: Soul Music
Newspaper/media lover: The Truth
Film buff: Moving Pictures
Scientist: The Science of Discworld
Other "starter" fantasy could include some Tom Holt (comedic, but real-world enough not to scare people off!), ... Which did I read first? It's so long ago I had to think long and hard, and finally came up with Moving Pictures, followed by Pyramids, which was a lucky choice because neither one has any of the main characters of the main series -es. (What's the plural of series? serii?)
Anyway, my two ... ... The Night Watch (more for the theme and the characters than for the story, 'tough), Witches Abroad, Small Gods, Moving Pictures... well, you see what I mean.
