Starting No. 72 Terry Pratchett's The Light Fantastic
Given that The Colour of Magic ends with a ummm cliff-hanger I thought I'd carry on with the next in the series.

I have Pratchett's The Light Fantastic and The Color of Magic - his first two I think - but when I started reading him it was just not the right time.
Which is a deviation on not being ... ... his books that have Rincewind as the main character, those would be the first few books in the series: Colour of Magic, the Light Fantastic, and a few others. Oh, and Reaper Man is my favorite DEATH book. ... and that I gave that away several years later to get someone else started. Consulting my bookshelves I find my copy of the Light Fantastic dates from 1986, so I probably bought both in the mid-80s in the days The Forbidden Planet was a small shop in Denmark Street, London and I suspect I ... ... Simmons book I was checking out. Then it dawned on me it was series. I immediately bought The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic and I've been a fan ever since.
There was a rough patch in the fall of '02 when I couldn't get Mort, Sourcery or Eric and had to special ... ... three Terry Pratchett books - The Color of Magic, Guards, Guards, and one of the ones with Death in it (probably The Light Fantastic, but I don't remember.)
I reallly need to get those read. I enjoyed the ones I did, but that was a loooong time ago, and I keep finding such nifty NE ... ... is that everyone's opinion varies.

9. Equal Rites The Colour of Magic was the first Discworld novel I read and it is also the first in the series. The next one is The Light Fantastic which I have on my bookshelf but haven't read yet. Then comes Equal Rites I think. I have read that you don't have to read them in any particular order though. ... is available in both hardback and paperback as of 1 November.
The Discworld Graphic Novels: The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett available in hardback from 16 June 2008.

I am glad I did not start out with Light Fantastic, it is good but not nearly as funny or gripping as the later books. I might not have stuck with the series if I read it first and that would have been a ... What I'm really narked about is that they seem to be combining elements of The Colour of Magic with The Light Fantastic. Surely there's enough material in each of the Discworld books to warrant doing each of them separately? Neither of the first two books in the series are anywhere near being ... It was Light fantastic - I believe it happened at the time of the reading of The Spell.
In Colour of magic the librarian, if he even features, is human. However I don't expect this will get in the way of the filmakers plot. 9.) The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett
10.) Equal Rites (no touchstone?) by Terry Pratchett
Ha! I went on vacation for five days and only finished two books- both of them Discworld series novels. I brought four or five "serious" books, Anthropology journals, lots of novels I ... ... but definately preferable to the alternative.

I agree with a lot of people that his Rincewind books aren't the best, of which The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic are the first two. They're not bad, but I think the jokes work better if you've already read a few of the other books.
Guards! Guards! is a ... ... etting.
In the first discworld books there is so much by energy in discworld itself that the story was almost irrelevant. The Light Fantastic (the second book and vastly better then COM) is the most extreme example of this.
As the series progresses the structure of the story becomes more ... A colour of magic and the light fantastic are parodies of the fantasy genre of writing, as they are themselves fantasy, they become self parodies, and aren't as funny as they could be. I don't much care for either, or the entire Rincewind 'series'.
From book three Equal Rites: the writing ... I normally suggest Equal Rites: as an entry piont for those who don't like Colour of magic, you probably wouldn't like the light fantastic either.
L-Space - linked off Terry Pratchett 's page has a reading order. ... all of them :-(
Here's another opening line:
"The sun rose slowly, as if it wasn't sure it was worth all the effort"
The Light Fantastic from Terry Pratchett ... lying around, and it feels like it is staring at me accusingly even though it hasn't got any eyes. (sorry been listening to The Light Fantastic and I love the Luggage). ... fave: Eric - it just never did it for me, although I was hard pushed to pick that one over The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic, beacuse I really don't rate either of them - in fact, if i'd started at the beginning of the Discworld series, I might never have read the rest of them! fav: Small Gods ...(sorry reading_fox)
least: The Truth
Others favorites include Carpe Jugulum, Thief of Time, The Light Fantastic (partially because of the luggage), and The Fifth Elephant
My lowest rating is three stars, so the least isn't that bad.
PS: Reading_Fox... link ... Good Omens introduced me to Pratchett's wild view of the world. Next was The Color of Magic then The Light Fantastic & I am most definitely hooked. If only I could find them in the Library or in used bookstores I'd be further into the series. Buying every one of them will blow my book ... I'm reading The Light Fantastic & listening to the audio book of The Silmarillion (Read it the old fashioned way the first time). Pratchett is hilarious. Will take time out from Discworld to read Gormenghast which is liable to a long project for me w/the amount of time I'm able to ... ... probably already found is pratchett Just in case you haven't I'd recommend skipping the first couple colour of magic light fantastic unless you're well read in fantasy generally, and start with Equal rites. ... Wintersmith is a good book. I think some of his early Discworld books - The Colour Of Magic and The Light Fantastic for example - have interesting ideas, but are not as well written or as human and touching as some of his more recent work. It's nice to read something ... ... agree on the (early? is circa 20 covers "early", but OK...) Pratchett covers. My then boyfriend, now husband, bought me Light Fantastic when I was sick some ten years ago. He bought it on recommendation from a guy workning at our local SF book store, but I thought the cover art HORRIBLE and ... ... I think - we were staying in self-catering accomodation, and the owner had provided a supply of paperbacks. I picked up The Light fantastic and was hooked !
Having said that, my addiction waned a few years ago, as I felt more recent titles were showing slippage in the quality control ... ... in it but it's still got the typical Pratchett feeling. She's now fighting her way through The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic to get to the good stuff ... ... need to go in order so haven't read anymore. I bought a dozen of his books at a garage sale but they sit unread until I get The Light Fantastic out of the library. The thing that stays with me is the idea of the need for a fence at the edge of the world to keep objects from falling over. Picked up some cheap remainders: The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic and Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett, and A Model World and Other Stories by Michael Chabon. :)
Sigh... why do I keep buying when I have so many still to read? ... these notes to only the books that are specifically about the reoccuring characters.
