... so I need to start crafting christmas presents) I bought Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux on tuesday and ordered Mort by Terry Pratchett on the internet which will arrive todat hopefully.

Have you read Reaper Man yet? It's the sequel to Mort and I think about twice as good--a much more mature book. Great for what ails you--but I hope you feel better soon!

... width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" forbidden="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /> 100. Mort - Terry Pratchett Another hilarious Discworld book. In this one, Death takes an apprentice, Mort. Mort is a great character, as is Death's daughter, Ysabell, and ...

If you are reading in publication order then "the third" would be Mort and that is a Rincewind-free zone. Don't worry though, because our favourite cowardly wizzard will save the world again in Sourcery which is next if you continue with the publication order. Discworld books can be read in ...

Finished up Mort a couple days ago and have shifted away from Discworld to read Blood of Elves by Andrzej Sapkowski (though I have least one more Pratchett book in my TBR pile). I enjoyed the game and the first book, The Last Wish, so I'm looking forward to this book.

... with, like The Colour of Magic it is a bit different. I think that Wyrd Sisters is the first proper witch one... Mort is the first of the Death series and Guards! Guards! is the first of the City Watch series. I am re-reading that one at the moment and having a quiet giggle to ...

... order, because the first (The Colour of Magic) is, frankly, a bit of a dud. I'd recommend one of the early Death ones - Mort is the first, I think - or one of the first with the Guard - would that be Guards! Guards!? Or one of the first with the Witches (Witches Abroad?). I'm also a fan ...

... My second one was The Hogfather which was, perhaps not a good choice either - it would have been better if I had read Mort first so that I would have some background. I agree with you about The Colour of Magic. It doesn't seem to fit in with the other books and it is the only one of P ...

Finished up Mort, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I think its time to give Discworld a break though. Next up, Blood of Elves by Andrzej Sapkowski. I hope it's as good as The Last Wish was.

Hi Kate, just wanted to drop in and say thanks for recommending Mort for me. It was a great way to start the Discworld.

185. Mort - Terry Pratchett Death takes on an apprentice (who learns the hard way what happens when the scythe hits the wrong person) and goes off to find out what it's like to be human. This was one of my least favourite Discworld books so far - I didn't think that the plot, the ...

"He walks through things only if he doesn't know he's doing it." Mort by Terry Pratchett "What's the use of having the power if you don't wield it?"

Still working on Mort by Terry Pratchett. Should finish it up this week and then I'll be giving Pratchett a break.

"Actually, they're sprouts with a dash of enchantment." Mort by Terry Pratchett "What he means is, what d'you want too drink?"

"I don't know if I'm allowed to tell you," said the voice. Mort by Terry Pratchett "How much more fatal, " said Keli, "than being dead?"

I finished up Pyramids and have started Mort by Terry Pratchett. I'm enjoying Mort more than Pyramids so far. Gotta love Death!

"No. You couldn't get one up these stairs," said Mort. Mort by Terry Pratchett NEVERTHELESS, YOU WISH--Death launched the words with a spin of distaste--AN AFTERNOON OFF?

... his collection of works. If you like Good Omens, I would suggest starting either the 'Death' novels, beginning with Mort, or the 'Witches' novels, beginning with Equal Rites.

Finished up Pyramids last night and have moved on to Mort. I'm having fun in Discworld.

Just finished up Pyramids and started Mort by Terry Pratchett. 1. Where did you get this book? Barns & Noble 2. How much did it cost? $7.99 3. Why did you pick this book to read NOW? Actually wanted to read it but it wasn't in stock so ended up buying and reading Pyramids. I've since ...

... January and now they're two of my favourite authors. By Pratchett I recommend Death's story arc in Discworld, starting with Mort. By Gaiman, I'd recommend Stardust to start with, but both authors are geniuses and you can't go wrong with any of their books. I also strongly recommend a YA book I ...

Mort?

42) Mort continued the Pratchett theme dspite my desire to finish off some of the work in progress. As for Mort - it was one ...

no not mort and it's not from Albert or Colon. It's from a certain wizzard

cmbohn in 999 Challenge : Dana's 999 Challenge (Jun 26, 2009, 12:39am)

I love Mort. It is one of my favorite Pratchett books. And the next one in the DEATH series is Reaper Man, which is possibly even better. I keep hearing about Three Men in a Boat. I have to find a copy of that! And I loved Barchester Towers. I was afraid it would be kind of stilted, ...

... are some comic mysteries I love. One of my favorite and funniest is Murder with Peacocks. And I love Terry Pratchett. Mort and Reaper Man are my all time faves, but then I love Wee Free Men too. And another vote for Wodehouse.

Caspettee, I adore Terry Pratchett! I've only read a few of his books (The Colour of Magic, Mort, Reaper Man), but I'm working on Soul Music right now. It's becoming a bit of an addiction, I think. :)

... for the release of The Little Stranger and I am soooo tempted to dash out and buy myself a copy right away. Finished Mort and Dispatches From the Edge. My first ER book arrived today so I'm going to start that whenever I get off the LT boards! ;) Still reading Pillars of the Earth ...

I love Pyramids but don't think I've ever said so on LT. So here you go. Lorie, definitely Mort before Reaper Man!

... I'm hoping for a good reading day today to hopefully finish at least one of the books I'm reading to. The current list is Mort, The Pillars of the Earth, Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Dispatches From the Edge (audio).

... I love the Wee Free Men series too. But in the discworld series I like the ones surrounding the character DEATH (like Mort and Thief of time) but the one called Reaper Man is my favorite... I just can't help laughing when I read that one.

June 1st I mooched a giant pile of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, so yesterday I finished Mort and now I'm about a third of the way into Sourcery. They're pretty funny, but I'm finding that I like some more than others.

Reaper Man is just................the best of the best. As is Mort. I think Death is one of the most inspired creations I have ever come across.

... of the Earth, and just started In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne, and Mort by Terry Pratchett.

My son is reading Mort as well. He is enjoying it so far. I just finished hanging out with the sea turtles, migrating to Ascension Island in Threads from the Web of Life. I'm really enjoying this book. Each essay is just long enough to enjoy while I eat lunch.

I'm also slipping into Discworld with Mort. As a contrast I'm spending time in Holcomb, Kansas with Capote's In Cold Blood.

I'm actually reading Mort right now and I love it! I've found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion. I'm still waiting for my copy of Equal Rites to come in through ILL, but I'm excited to start reading the witches' arc as well!

... somewhere around Small Gods, although I'm bound to go back one day. Death and the Witches are my personal favourites - Mort is classic. Do persevere!

I'm also going to try Charlene Harris because of your comments. BTW, I'm very excited because I put Mort on hold at the library and I've finally worked my way down the list and it's now in! You recommended it to me a while back on this thread.

>5: Personally, I would start with either Mort, Guards! Guards! or The Wee Free Men. You'll get different opinions from different people...the only thing in common is that you start with the beginning of one of the "subseries". Those three represent the starts of the Death, City Watch and Ti ...

I just finished Mort, which I adored, and have started The Stupidest Angel. Only about 20 pages in and I've cracked up at least 3 times. I love Christopher Moore at his best :)

34. Mort Aw, I really liked this one. I think it's regarded as one of the best Discworld novels, and I can see why - I read somewhere that TP received an award for Gothic Novel for it, even though he protested, and that totally fits. While Mort still has the comedic and slightly ridiculous ...

About Mort ... I'm rooting for Ysabel and Mort at the moment, and I'm not sure why. I think it's the slap-slap-kiss element they've got going on, with the insults and the fighting and the uppityness which to me just screams that they're made for each other ... think Ron and Hermione. Anyway. I ...

33. Equal Rites Hrm. I liked it, but nowhere near as much as Light Fantastic, and not as much as I'm liking Mort, which I'm about a 1/3 of the way through now. Maybe Granny Weatherwax Discworld novels aren't for me? The ideas were quite philosophical this time, everything being made of ...

... I'm on Equal Rites now - it's not as gripping as The Light Fantastic but I want to get through it so I can go on to Mort.

... of the rest of his books, as you say yourself. I don't think Pratchett becomes truly pratchettish until maybe Mort. Before that, he's kinda like Douglas Adams in Discworld. #156 - I must confess that I never knew thongs could be anything other than footwear. I shall have to ...

I'm also a recent fan of Pratchett's. I've read the first two in the series, as well as Mort (the first one I read) which had me hooked. I am determined to read them all. I don't own any, but my daughter has most of the series in her collection, so as I am babysitting her books for the next ...

#62/63 Yep, I'd agree that Reaper Man is even better than Mort too! #64 I also love Edward Gorey - I saw an adaptation of The Doubtful Guest a little while again - it was wonderful, but I'm guessing that if you'd never seen the books it could be a bit confusing!

#62 ronincats: Oh, good, I own Reaper Man. That means I don't need to make a trip to the library. And it's better than Mort, you say? Fantastic!

Finished Mort today. I didn't want it to end! I absolutely loved this book. 11. Mort by Terry Pratchett I absolutely loved this book. Death is one of my favourite Discworld characters (topped only by the sapient pearwood Chest), so reading a book that focused on him was fantastic. Poor Death, always so alone. All he wants to do is have fun and work with cats! :) An ...

Interesting. What immediately came to my mind were the Pratchett Discworld novels. Certainly "death" is not serious there, and yet, under all the humor, it truly is so and isn't really taken lightly. Another I've recently read is the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson. He gets pretty serious ...

I'd suggest starting Discworld with equal rites though guards guards is another popular beginning or Mort. the actual first book colour of magic isn't that good compared to some of the others, it took Teery a few books to settle into his style. Other series I'm actively following Wars ...

Mort was my favorite also. I liked Equal Rites but I have been disappointed that the Wizard Girl hasn't shown up in any of the other books I've read so far.

Hmm. They were all rereads, but of these three I'd have to say Mort though Equal Rites was a close second. Death and Granny Weatherwax are two of my favorite characters, so its kind of hard for me to choose. I did find that Sourcery wasn't one of my favs. It wasn't as fun the second time ...

Dana, I'm enjoying hearing about the books you are reading. Mort was my first Pratchett too, and it has got me started on the Discworld series. I also loved The Memory of Running which I read when it first came out. And I have Three Men in a Boat waiting for me to read as we speak!

Finished No. 74 Starting No. 75 Terry Pratchett's Mort Not from TBR pile. Still reading my way through the series. So TBR pile = 58

I got the Death Trilogy by Terry Pratchett. I've already read Mort and Reaper Man, now it's on to Soul Music. Just what I needed. So funny!

Finished Mort last night, which I loved as much as I expected, and am now reading A Short History Of Nearly Everything, and feel like I'm getting very smart. Dude, seriously, the universe is HUGE.

Finished Mort yesterday at my brother's baseball game, and since my copy of Sourcery had been moved by a well-intentioned parent, I'm now reading A Short History Of Nearly Everything. Science is AWESOME.

Caspette, how can you dislike Mort?! And enough to list it twice? It's the one I always used to give people as a gateway into the series. How can anyone resist "Death comes to us all. When he came to Mort, he offered him a job."?!!

I'm on another Terry Pratchett kick, which is always disastrous for my reading list. Currently reading Mort, then Sourcery, then I want to go buy the rest of Discworld, because it makes me inordinately happy.

After I finish Mort, * Sourcery * The Thirteenth Tale * A Short History Of Nearly Everything * Swann's Way So many more....

Finished my ARC The 19th Wife, which I quite enjoyed, and am now reading Mort which I love. Pratchett can do no wrong. But I'm still sad about my books being so far away - it's screwing up my reading schedule!

Finally gave in to the Book Monkey on my back, and bought Sourcery & Mort, continuing my Discworld love. Has anyone read Snuff by Chuck Palahniuk? (The author touchstones NEVER work for me). Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

I occasionally enjoy Pratchett. I haven't read many of the Discworld books, though -- just Mort, The Truth and the Tiffany Aching books (The Wee Free Men, A Hat Full of Sky, Wintersmith). I think there are other Pratchett fans around, though!

... backwards and forwards in the background. Thankfully, it’s starting to fade. Powerful little book. Now I’m reading Mort…Terry Pratchett, discworld, certainly seems like one of the better ones.

... and The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. Bought them due to recommendations on LT. Found at Barnes & Noble: Mort and Small Gods by Terry Pratchett. Also due to LT recommendations. Bought a 2007 World Almanac for my DH who loves to fill his head with minutiae. What gets me is ...

From Mort, because we can always use another line from Terry Pratchett “’You See, everything’s fixed. History is all worked out, from start to finish. What the facts actually are is beside the point; history just rolls along straight over the top of them. You can’t change ...

... and an awful lot of fantasy books. I think I'd recommend Earthsea first, though. My husband read a few early Discworld books but wasn't convinced, and has been rather put off fantasy ever since. It's all a matter of individual taste.

... as an epic series to others among you-but I'm counting it as one! Speaking , of course,of Terry Pratchett('s) Discworld Series. I've only just begun-having finished The Color of Magic. Reading Good Omens by Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman was what lead me to want read more ...

... George R R Martin A Song of Ice and Fire series starting with A game of Thrones as well as the Terry Pratchett Discworld novels probably starting with Mort. I have just read the fabulous Alison Croggon and her series of books The Gift The Riddle and the Crow too and ...

I think MORT is the first book starring DEATH - it is one of my frequent rereads :-) Anyone who enjoys the DEATH-character should check out Good Omens where he is sort of seconded by his sidekicks... say no more! It is about the funniest book I've ever read, and I find new things in it every ...

... little I know about my own country's politics/history) and when I need something a little less intense, I'm also reading Mort by Terry Pratchett. (And sitting on my couch are a bunch of others I'm "currently reading" but haven't necessarily touched in a few weeks... I should get on ...

... the Watch-novels, and the Witches and of course DEATH. It's hard to name a favourite novel, as there are a few of them, but Mort, The Night Watch (more for the theme and the characters than for the story, 'tough), Witches Abroad, Small Gods, Moving Pictures... well, you see what I mean. ...

I started with Mort, like many others-- I wonder if that coincided with his first US releases? Anyway, my best friend and I got into Pratchett at the same time, and we shared our collection-- one would buy one and we'd read it, then the other would buy the next one. ... omens which is a collaboration of Pratchett and Gaiman. It took me a while to get into it and I just finished Mort (I'm reading them in order so that was only the fourth part). But I have already bought the next three parts and can't wait to get to them. But so far, in my opinion, ...
