After all this lot we might need some of the hangover buster the Wizards make for the Oh God in Hogfather. #104 - there certainly are other Pratchetts as you describe :) In fact I think Hogfather is the second or third in the Death-and-Susan miniseries. Does it start with Soul Music?
Just checked on Wikipedia - seems that's right - Soul Music first, then Hogfather. Go touchstones!
and welcome to LT My first two were Hogfather and Carpe Jugulum, both of which I loved. Then I went to a collection of the Rincewind novels, The Color of Magic being the first in that. I really enjoyed The Color of Magic, I'm not sure why others don't. I think I would have liked it even if it was my first, but ... ... books, you can pretty much choose any though. The series aren't that reliant on each other.
My personal favourite is Hogfather
More suggestions at the discworld group My first, and favorite was Hogfather. I think #2, whoever they are (how DID you do that?), had the right idea. Find out what they are interested in. If they love Australia, The Last Continent is fun, but I do think that Guards!, Guards! is terrific and would have a wider appeal. was the Hogfather read by Tony Robinson? I've been interested in getting some Discworld books on CD for a while, but just haven't got around to it... and if you enjoyed Hogfather then I'm sure you'll enjoy many of the other Discworld books :-) ... kept this cassette from the 70's to have the professor himself on tape.
As far as current stuff, I just listened to The Hogfather by Terry Pratchett and can't tell you how many times I laughed out loud. (I checked the cd's out from the library so it's not included in my LT library) It ... 1. Witches (especially Lords and Ladies)
2. Death (especially Mort and Hogfather)
3. Wizards
I also really enjoy it when death crops up briefly in other books. I forget which one it was, when he turned up early and said ‘don’t worry, I have a book.’ Comedy itself.
The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth
9tail Fox by Jon Courtenay Grimwood
Hogfather by Terry Pratchett
Mrs. Pollifax and the Lion Killer by Dorothy Gilman
Coyote Waits by Tony Hillerman I started with Hogfather and fell in love with Death. I then read Carpe Jugulum and loved it too. Then I read the Rincewind series of stories, personally, I really liked them, except for Eric and Sourcery: discworld. My daughter loves them as well, and we are now working on reading through ... ... Piper on the Mountain, City of Gold and Shadows and Death Mask by Ellis Peters. In the Fred Myer store we found Hogfather and Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett. ... City of Gold and Shadows, The Knocker on Death's Door, Death Mask, all by Ellis Peters. Reaper Man and Hogfather by Terry Pratchett. I've read or have the Pratchett books, but I loved Hogfather and someday, my daughter tells me, she is moving and taking all the Pratchett' ... ... new house to be able to catalogue all my volumes. ;)
I first got introduced to the Discworld by my mother, who bought me Hogfather many many years ago... it being the only English-language book she could find in the shops. I drive her crazy sometimes with my insistence on reading English ... ... need a few alternative options though so maybe
Terry Pratchett - not all of them, but Small Gods, Wyrd Sisters, Hogfather or as #16 suggests the Tiffany three.
Then non-fiction (ish) there is The Wordsworth Book of Spells
Oh dear touchstones aren't happy today. I'll settle ... ... - Sherwood Smith
15. The French Lieutenant's Woman - John Fowles
16. Soul Music - Terry Pratchett
17. Hogfather - Terry Pratchett
18. The Thief's Gamble - Juliet E. McKenna
19. Eleanor of Aquitaine - Alison Weir
20. War for the Oaks - Emma Bull
21. ... Guess I've said this elsewhere, my first was Hogfather, checked out from the library in case I hated it. I learned about Pratchett from online folks. I loved Hogfather and promptly started buying/checking out more. It was my intention to only buy used paperbacks or hardbacks, but it's very hard ... Favorite: Hogfather, possibly just because it was my first, but especially because of Death.
Least favorite: Eric - I did like the parts in Hell, but I was comparing them to Dante. I haven't read Faust yet.
I liked The Color of Magic a novel of Discworld because it was an intro, it was ... Hello, I'm Lee. I discovered Pratchett through LT just this last December. I started with Hogfather, as it seemed appropriate to the season. Loved it. Got my daughter hooked, who is now the official Pratchett collector in our family, at least until she moves out. Then I may have to start my own ... ... running gag about how *everyone* was a girl. It was a really frustrating read for me.
Contenders: For faves, I love Hogfather, Witches Abroad (because you never forget your first), and surprisingly enough, Eric. That one was the first Rincewind book I really enjoyed and I loved all ... ... movies. If they aren't going to do it right though, they might as well skip it. I have heard mixed reviews about the Hogfather movie, but haven't been able to see it for myself. ... ahead!
Some of my personal favourites are The Truth, Thief of Time, The Fifth Elephant, Soul Music, Jingo, and Hogfather. The young adult Discworld books The Wee Free Men, A Hat Full of Sky and Wintersmith are excellent too, well worth reading.
The Death books and Watch ... ... group - lots more Terry Pratchett fans there.
Yes CoM is the first.
'Best' is a variable concept. My favourite is Hogfather but not everyone agrees with me.
#2 has it on the reading order - There are a number of "main" characters, each with their own "mini-series" of books featuring ... ... evocative phrase, which contrasts with the pure science expression "A ball of flaming gas illuminating the marshes"
From Hogfather and Terry pratchett's twisted take on the power of belief.
There is a very important though subtle difference in the two.
... - Sherwood Smith
15. The French Lieutenant's Woman - John Fowles
16. Soul Music - Terry Pratchett
17. Hogfather- Terry Pratchett
18. The Thief's Gamble - Juliet E. McKenna
19. Eleanor of Aquitaine - Alison Weir
... and Soul Music were made into animated mini-series, and that last Christmas we were given a live-action version of Hogfather to enjoy, but I was wondering, which Pratchett novel would you most like to see filmed and who would you love to see cast in the roles? ... off with Soul Music - more than halfway through already and loving it. After I've finished that I'll go straight to Hogfather and then Thief of Time. My friend has loaned me these books and given me a strict sequence to read them in! ...
Yes you are restricted to ONE choice each for your favourite and least favourite Discworld book. I know it's hard
Fav: Hogfather
Least: Small Gods but there are a few other close contenders. ... the characters... but the story itself is worth the reading and soon enough I was hooked, turning page after page.
Btw, Hogfather is one of my least favourite Discworld novels... Still, I've read it more than once.
I'm hard pressed on which is my favourite as they differ a lot. Maybe Small ... #47 - Hogfather was the first Pratchett book I read, and I think it is still my favorite.
#44 - These aren't fantasies, except in the broadest sense of the word, they are mysteries, Ellis Peters Cadfael series are wonderful stories which take place for the most part in monasteries in En ... Hogfather's really good, one of my most favourite Terry Pratchett books. Nominally a Christmas story but you know how twisted the Discworld gets. ... read The French Lieutenant's Woman for my literature class, and then perhaps something by Terry Pratchett - I've got Hogfather with me at the moment, but my friend has sent me three of his books so I don't know which I'll choose next! ... of Magic, Where's My Cow?, The Art of Discworld, Wee Free Men, A Hat Full of Sky, Night Watch, Going Postal, Hogfather, Thud!, Monstrous Regiment and Wintersmith.
Out of those, I have only read the first three. I keep telling myself I will read the rest when I have them ... #10 I have only encountered Rincewind and the wizards in Hogfather, but I love Rincewind. The man who always wanted to run away, and often did, but when it came down to it, he got the job done. Not much for magical solutions though, I guess.
One version of King Arthur which I read years ago, ... ... existed. That's why I like Pratchett's system of belief so much--the more people believe in something, the truer it is. Hogfather demonstrates this quite well, as has already been discussed; I also particularly liked Small Gods.
Going along with believing in myth and being an English ... #128 Hogfather was the first Pratchett book I read, and I loved it. I wonder how many of the references in it I would see differently than unbelievers would see them? The whole origin of Christmas (Hogwartsday) thing. I think it is closer to the truth than many Christians understand. I can't ... Pratchett is always worth of thought. Have you read hogfather? The difference between " a ball of flaming gas illuminating the marshes" and " the sun coming up" is I feel one of his most profound statements on the human condition. Teatime from Hogfather, pretty much any bad guy Paul Bettany has played and The Scarecrow from Batman Begins. For starters. Creepy. Another one, not from a fantasy, but from a mystery by Dorothy Sayers is Dr. Julian Freke. Absolutely no hesitation moral or otherwise to wipe out anyone ... ... Fisherman of the Inland Sea by Ursula K Le Guin
4. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens (look! A classic!)
5. Hogfather and the Discworld Companion (2nd edn) - counted as one because I didn't really mean to read the Companion from beginning to end. It just happened.
6. Mixed Mag ... What? They made a film of Hogfather? Who? Where? When? ... details from the book afterwards. Because if you read the book first the movie will always dissapoint.
Anybody seen the Hogfather film? Is it any good? Enjoyed Agents of Light and Darkness, followed it up with Divine Evil; Adam and Eve Pinch Me; Hogfather (well I *had* to contrast the tv series with the original) and A Good Yarn. I'm currently reading Quantum Prophecy which is a nice bit of light reading. We don't read together anymore, however, when one of us reads a great book, we pass it along to the others, the latest was Hogfather by Terry Pratchett. In a very strange and twisted way, it embodies the Spirit of Christmas in the charachter of Death. Some metaphor there? If there is, I don't ... ... Dumas
Locked Rooms by Laurie King
Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
Gesundheit! by Patch Adams
Hogfather by Terry Pratchett I began Carpe Jugulum, it hasn't grabbed my yet like Hogfather. After this I really am going to be a good girl and finish the biography of Robert Graves and Les Miserables, which I am still reading. Hogfather by Pratchett to expose the "real" meaning behind Christmas. I've heard of the Stupidest Angel but not got around to trying it. I'll add it to the wishlist pile, sounds like my sort of fun. I just finished my first Terry Pratchett novel, Hogfather, it seemed appropriate to the season. I am in love with Death now. I haven't been able to find these books in the used book stores I frequent, so I went to the library instead and picked out two that looked interesting to me. I had ... ... help myself again, this site is deadly for my diciplined reading schedule. Began reading my first Terry Pratchett book, Hogfather. It looked seasonal somehow. ... stressful...
About what book to read I've decieded to stay low and go with whatever the rest of you choose... But maybe Hogfather, by Pratchett? It's lightweight and a fast read, despite being thick (at least as Pratchetts go). And it's about "christmas" och "yule" or "jul" or whatever ... I found the two first Rincewind books in Danish at the childrens library. Years later I got Hogfather on a trip to London - this is still one of my all time favourite Pratchett books along with Witches Abroad.
But in general I like the Witches books the best and the Night Watch books. I've mooched 3 books so far:
The Dark Wind by Tony Hillerman
Language Visible by David Sacks
Hogfather by Terry Pratchett
So far, nobody has mooched me. My id there is: krin5292 ... a cartoon. Someone had made Soul Music and Wyrd Sisters into cartoons. I first read Soul Music and then I read Hogfather. to be perfectly honest, I'm not all that fond of Rincewind. ... Watch)
