The Last Continent by Terry Pratchett!
Thin fellow, was he?" One of Terry Pratchett's discworld fantasy/parody novels The Last Continent is set in a place that is a bit Australia-ish. I think it would make more sense if you wait until you've been here a while, but people from all over the world have enjoyed it without ever visiting. I've heard Pratchett's name bandied about here and among my friends IRL a lot, but never really got around to reading any of the Discworld books, not sure why. A couple weeks ago I was hanging out at a friend's house and found this lying around. After reading the first ~10 ... I finished a Wise Heart yesterday. A friend recently introduced me to Terry Pratchett and I'm currently enjoying the Last Continent. I also picked up a copy of Small Gods which will probably be my next Pratchett read. Is it The last continent? Definitely Rincewind, but he spends most of his time being imprisoned or running so that doesn't really help...

Tree of Smoke--Denis Johnson ... (including Tiffany) and Vimes definitely comes in third. Being Australian there is also a special place in my heart for The Last Continent (especially after discovering that meat pie floaters are real!) ... whoever they are (how DID you do that?), had the right idea. Find out what they are interested in. If they love Australia, The Last Continent is fun, but I do think that Guards!, Guards! is terrific and would have a wider appeal. #30 Very scary allergy that, nuts are in so many things.
Has anyone read the Pratchett book The Last Continent wherein the creation of Vegemite is described? Or is it the creation of Marmite? I think beer was used. ... Books signed by Terry Pratchett, The Colour of Magic, Good Omens (a collaboration with Neil Gaiman), Mort, and The Last Continent. ... include Reaper Man, Men at Arms : a novel of Discworld (man it's hard to get those touchstones straight), Jingo, and The Last Continent.
Nice to meet you all! ... books too. My husband has read a couple, I think his favorite so far is Good Omens. My other favorite books so far: The Last Continent, Lords and Ladies, Carpe Jugulum, Guards! Guards!

Colour of magic (discworld novel), light fantastic, interesting times, and the last continent. Although none get less than 3 stars too.
I know many people who do really like Small gods, but I just don't find it that funny. Some conversations ... Ooop, I put this on the wrong thread before. I finished Terry Pratchett's The Last Continent. Loved it. Laughed more than any other of his that I've read yet.
How nice, the touchstones weren't working on the other thread, but they loaded right up here. Picked up The Last Continent this morning while I was cleaning the coffeepot with vinegar. Fun way to wait for the timer to go off. ... I beat my numbers from last year in spite of falling asleep every 20 min. Hoping to get to another Pratchett book soon, The Last Continent, if I can find it. #12 - As an Australian, I'm sure when I finally get around to reading last continent I will love it :) 'Mate' is a pretty common word, especially in the small country town I live in, even though the word usually annoys me and I only use it when i'm being sarcastic.
I have always loved Gandalf. ... #11 - Neither am I, and maybe that's why I like the Discworld ones ;-)

In Last Continent Rincewind is stranded in the strange country of XXX where everyone says "mate" to each other.. etc. I don't know what people from Australia thinks of it, but I think it's funny! ... series, and I have to admit that one of the reasons for that is the wizards. All of them.
OK, maybe not Rincewind (but The Last Continent is a good one, as are a few of the others that feature him). I think the Archchancellor Ridcully is a favourite for being both daft and clever, but I ... ... Times (Rincewind)
