Tumblebooks is an an interactive virtual library for which libraries can purchase subscriptions. It is mostly targeted at elementary-school age kids, although some of the books, games, videos, etc that are available on it may be appropriate for middle-school-aged children as well. It offers animated ebooks that users can choose to have read aloud to them or read to themselves, making it useful to practice reading. Users can also either have the pages turn automatically or turn them manually, allowing for a fair amount of customization of the experience to fit the needs of users that read faster or slower. Unfortunately, the user does not have the same level of control over the animations, which run at the same speed as the reading voice regardless of if that feature is on or off. The settings are not always self explanatory, occasionally making it hard to adjust them. The games tend to be good for children who already have a good grasp of reading and are not always particularly useful to learning (such as word searches). Overall, however, Tumblebooks is a fairly entertaining resource that does encourage reading practice and is worth considering purchasing a subscription to. ( )

Alternative format with talking e-books will appeal to and assist struggling readers and meet the needs of both auditory and visual learners. Would also be useful for ELL students. Comes complete with 300 TumbleBooks, 200 iPad compatible books, 23 Read-Along Chapter Books, and 50 Nonfiction books. Also includes videos, games, and teacher resources. May be difficult for some children to find the English puzzles as the first page is full of Spanish books. Annual subscription is $499 which allows access from school without a login or home with a login.

Recommended for ages 3-9. ( )
