Bonita Avenue by Peter Buwalda (2010)

  1. 00
    Tirza by Arnon Grunberg (JustJoey4)
  2. 01
The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber (pingdjip)
  3. 01
Hokwerda's kind by Oek de Jong (pingdjip)
Criminaliteit.

Bonita Avenue is the unraveling of the Sigerius Family because of SECRETS. Relationships are destroyed by lies, minds destroyed by madness.
The characters in the scen and Aaron Bever, Joni’s fella,
Siem Sigerius
and his wife, Tineke,
Siem Sigerius, a former athlete and current math genius,
Tineke, Siem's wife
Joni, Siem's headstrong daughter;
Aaron Bever, Joni’s fella,
Siem's son, Wilbert, is in prison for killing a supervisor with a sledgehammer.
This is intriguing, but I just couldn't understand a lot of the situations. There were places and names I didn't understand. It was a good book, just couldn't understand it.

I received this book from Blogging For Books for this review.

I won this book on Goodreads and I always try to finish the books I win. But this one, even though I stuck with it for over 200 pages, was just a chaotic mess. It bounced around from one story or thought without warning even within a chapter. It went from current time to flashbacks but they didn't feel like flashbacks and a subject was covered and then quickly abandoned without any resolution.

It is totally confusing and I didn't care at all about the characters. I wasn't invested at all and when that happens I don't like wasting my time with a book. It should never take me this long to read a book unless it's 1,000 pages.

This book was not for me. Might be for someone else. I hate to abandon books but I did on this one. ( )

Jammer. ( )

Although i think that the end was a bit over the top, this is one of the better books i have read lately. ( )

While the plot orchestration and lively character renderings of “Bonita Avenue” are dazzling, Buwalda’s go-for-broke style can be a hit-and-miss affair. Sometimes it’s brilliantly on target. Sometimes it just feels overwritten.

No one is especially likeable, but Buwalda knows how to tease his reader with addictive story lines. A considerable achievement for a seasoned writer much less a newcomer, Bonita Avenue is an entertaining end in itself, and evidence that Buwalda is just getting started.

Peter Buwalda is a Dutch journalist and his debut novel is one wild ride: a swirling helix of a family saga that swerves from gross-out sex comedy to pitch-black revenge tragedy as twist after twist reframes what we know about its dysfunctional cast.

- Sasha Grey

Book description
Professor Siem Sigerius - maths genius, jazz lover, judo champion, Renaissance man. When Aaron meets his girlfriend Joni's family for the first time, her multitalented father could hardly be a more intimidating figure, but somehow the underachieving photographer manages to bluff his way to a friendship with the paterfamilias. With his feet under the table at the beautiful Sigerius farmhouse, Aaron feels part of the family. A perfect family.

Until, that is, things start to go wrong in a very big way. A cataclysmic explosion in a firework factory, the advent of internet pornography, the reappearance of a forgotten murderer and a jet-black wig-all play a role in the spectacular fragmentation of the Sigerius clan... and of Aaron's fragile psyche.
