I guess I'm just worried about Pillars of the Earth turning out the way The Hour I First Believed did, at least for me. So many people raved about it, but I hated it. I loved both Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. Pillars of the Earth was better in my opinion but they were both very very good. Don't expect the way the people behave to be historically accurate (although the building process was) but I found it so enjoyable.

The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
#151, LadyN, let me know how you like The Pillars of the Earth , it sounds very good and I think it's one I'm going to have to get soon, despite my tottering TBR pile. I read one and add three! ;-)
... Book of Dave, Restoration, Wuthering Heights The Raw Shark Texts and Death of a Murderer, I've now also oredered The Pillars of the Earth , A Prayer for Owen Meany, In Cold Blood and Donnie Brasco.
I need more shelves.
Hoping to finally finish The Pillars of the Earth - I've been reading it since September 1st. It's really good, though, so I don't begrudge the time I'm spending on it. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and purchase the "sequel" World Without End when it comes out on 10/6.

I think Ken Follett is coming out with a sequel to his, Pillars of the Earth , this fall.

#5 - Not to derail the thread, but john257hopper, there's a sequel coming out to Pillars of the Earth ? Could you drop by my profile and shoot me some comment info about it? Loved that book too!
... note to try to re-read more when my mind needs a bit more of a rest, instead of reading new stuff. I recently re-read Pillars of the Earth ahead of the sequel coming out and loved it as much as the first time.
I received through Bookmooch a badly beaten up copy of Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.
Katybear --- I too love Pillars of the Earth by Follett. It is a sweeping historical fiction set in the middle ages. It centers on a stone cutter who builds a great cathedral over many decades. Yes there is a love story but it is more secondary, we do learn about his family and their ...
Also, AmandaB18: I noticed that you listed Pillars of the Earth . I have a friend who swears that it is one of the best books she has ever read - and that it is a great romance. Can you elaborate any on that? I've never read any of that author's books before, but I always thought of Ken Folle ...

I enjoyed Pillars of the Earth very much as well. I was living in London at the time I read it, and it was a kick to take day trips and visit the places mentioned in the book.

Welcome to the group, Amanda! I have heard that The Pillars of the Earth is a good book - and a romance, even though I always thought Ken Follett was more of a general fiction writer. Is the romance the focus of the book, or a side storyline?
... series by Diana Gabaldon and The Bronze Horseman (and it's sequel) by Paullina Simons.
I also have to mention The Pillars of the Earth and Swan Song (which isn't really romantic or historical, but it's fantastic).

Try any of Thomas Costain's works. As someone recommended earlier, The Pillars of the Earth is another good one. I recall reading somewhere that there might be a sequel to it...
I didn't really like The Pillars of the Earth , either- though I did read all 1,000 pages of it! I guess I can't say that I disliked it- just that it didn't hit me one as being a great novel by any means. Follett is writing a sequel to the novel, in case anyone cared. I personally thought there ...
Personally, I found Pillars of Earth horrendously boring and only got about 50 pages in before giving up.
However, I have to agree that Philippa Gregory is divine.
... There are several still on my TBR list but also one of the very few I've given up on from sheer, mind-numbing boredom, The Pillars of Earth by Ken Follett. I have no idea what the appeal is.

No, I've never read it. I'm putting a touchstone in, partly to get to info. about it more lazily. Pillars of the Earth sounds like the kind of book I sometimes love - and sometimes hate. At any rate, you've stirred me to have a look at it.

I don't remember if it was Pillars of the Earth or something else that got me started on my love of historical fiction... Actually, I think it was. I was in the book store and asking for recommendations from the woman working there. I gotta admit, seeing Ken Follett's name on the spine had ...
I love historical fiction, and find myself reading mainly Ancient Rome and the Middle Ages.

I'd almost forgetten that I'd read Pillars of the Earth , but would largely agree (the only part of the book I liked was when Follett wasn't dealing with any of his attempted characters, but with the Cathe ...
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. The story was OK, most of the characters were all right, if one-dimensional, but what was with the wild woman and her son? Truly horrible. I knew by the time I was a few chapters in that I would hate it, but I stuck with it just to gauge how bad it ...
