I stuck with Pillars of the Earth to the end because I truly liked the beginning of the book and hoped the book would improve through the dragging parts, but after finishing it disappointed, no way was I going to tackle World Without End. This week, I abandoned Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife. I ...

I ended up skimming a lot of Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. These novels did not live up to the hype, although I have definitely read worse! It was pretty cool that in both novels the women ruled.... how could we have left the middle-ages without females???

I thoroughly enjoyed Pillars of the Earth. However, I did chuckle a few times when I realized it was a bit like watching the television series "24" in the sense that the speed at which disasters can occur is a bit.....a tad.....okay, way too much.

I've a brand new copy of World Without End staring me in the face. I haven't read good reviews on it--Pillars of the Earth was really a good read, but I think I'd better give up on my plans for World Without End. Thanks for making up my mind!

Bookmarque, I listened to Pillars of the Earth over my Christmas driving back and forth to family and loved it! I just started the sequel, World without End, and so far, so good. Just a comment on abridgements. Normally I won't listen to them because they just leave out too much, but I do ...

My votes go to Gone with the Wind and Pillars of the Earth, both great, long novels.

Pillars of the Earth and World Without End both by Ken Follet should fit the bill. Both center around life in Kingsbridge, England. The first is set in the 12th century, the second in the 14th. Soap opera-ish, but emotional and engaging. Oh and while each individual installment isn't over 1 ...

this is a great topic... Pillars of the Earth - about 500 pages too long Stones From the River - it made my skin crawl. I have no idea why, just did. Bonfire of the Vanities - loathsome book Wicked - I liked the first two parts, and then it just fell apart. All of Hemingway, ...

... the bubbles more bubbly heh. And he lights candles. Bliss. I have been known to drop a book in the bath though...er...Pillars of the Earth it was. Glad you had a nice, refreshing bath Flee, Clam and whoever else did too! (Honey and Milk shower and bath stuff for me!)

I don't know if I'd add Pillars of the Earth, while it is an engrossing book and a fantastic story, the writing is sub-par. It's popular fiction, and I don't know if I'd call it literature.

... agree that Raymond Carver and the mists of avalon should be included. i would also add the alchemist, the pillars of the earth, and east of eden if it wasn't included.

... - read 2. Flowers for Algernon Daniel Keyes - heard about this on a forum but I don't normally read Science Fiction 3. Pillars of the Earth Ken Follett - was given this as a present/recommended by a friend. Not something I'd have picked up myself at all. 4. Glyph Percival Everett - lots ...

Read Pillars of the Earth some time ago and rank it among the best of the best. Now into the Post-American World and the Secret Adversary by Agatha Christie for fun. ( freebie on the Kindle).

I finally finished The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. Oh my goodness! That was a very long 45 hour audiobook. It lasted through a long drive from New York to Michigan, a quiet vacation at the cottage, and lots of cross stitching. I have to say that "The Pillars of the Earth" was ...

Well, as I cross stitch, I am listening to Pillars of the Earth in the land of 12th century England and France, learning about love and cathedrals. While reading, I just journeyed to the Mughal Empire in the Indian subcontinent in the 1500s to learn about The Enchantress of Florence. Ahh, ...

Anachronism is one thing, but can you imagine reading Pillars of the Earth in its vernacular? That's what I think makes a story inaccessible to a modern reader. Recently I read The Book of Air and Shadows and large sections of that novel were 16th century documents written in the style of the ...

I listened to Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth on audio CD and loved it. But, somewhere near the end I must have gotten distracted briefly distracted while driving and missed what happened to Martha at the end of the book. The last thing I remember was that she was at the burial of Alfred, ...

I enjoyed reading the comments on Pillars of the Earth. I felt the book was about 400 pages too long. One of my co-workers was raving about World Without End on audio so I thought I would give it a try and what a difference. The reader has such a beautiful voice and the 43 hours just flew by. ...

... Sometimes I have to forgo a book after I've started it Inside Inside because the hardback is too heavy to carry The Pillars of the Earth. (I love James Lipton, but he can carry himself around NYC on my vacation - the pb Follet was a lot easier on my posture). I'll finish them both ...

So far - The only 5-star winner is - Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. Sure, it's not literature, but it is one hell of a story. The only 4-star winners are conveniently 4 in number also - The Egyptologist by Arthur Phillips. A re-read technically. The Book of Air and Shadows by M ...

... Antony and Cleopatra by Colleen McCullough. I think I will be moving to 12th Century England next, with Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth.

I've been keeping track of my books read in 2008 on my profile, and this looked like a fun way to do it too. I got off to a slow start, but am taking a month-long vacation in August/September and hope to make up some ground then. So far: 1. The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett 2. World With ...

I bought a book for the upcoming summer; The pillars of the earth by Ken Follett.

Ken Follett wrote Pillars of the Earth and World Without End about life in Medieval England. I found them fairly authentic but a bit clean in his description of living conditions. The strength of the women in the book endeared me to the stories!

I enjoyed Pillars of the Earth and World Without End (sequel to the first), although I do not think of them as "great" works. The strength of the women in the books really excited me. At first I thought this was literary license, but after doing research on the era's in which the stories took ...

You are definitely ahead of me now! Painting at my brother's has cut into my reading time in a serious way. I loved Pillars of the Earth too and want to read World Without End eventually. Someday!

I continue listening to Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett and I am reading The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides.

... the title though. Update, another one today, a traveller tugging his carry-on down the concourse with Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth sticking out of the side pocket. What hath Oprah done! I was getting my hair cut this morning and the person in the next chair had The Pillars of ...

I just finished The Pillars of the Earth. I will definitely read the sequel, but I need a break! I have three books that I'm considering beginning next: Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon, The Snow Queen by Mercedes Lackey, or The Wolfman by Nicholas Pekearo. I'm leaning ...

... of Sol Rosenberg and his experiences in the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII and how he survived...it is remarkable. I enjoyed Pillars of the Earth and Blood of Flowers.

>197 I'm in the minority opinion about The Pillars of the Earth - I found it okay. I think I gave it 3 or 3.5 stars. A solid read, but not great.

#197: I loved The Pillars of the Earth! I just finished Saturday by Ian McEwan, and am bout to start reading 1984.

#37 The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, 991 pages. Whew! I loved this book, but I'm glad I can now move on to something else! Total Pages = 12331

... McCourt. I refused to read A Thousand Splendid Suns. I am sure it IS good.. but I am just not up another sad read. The Pillars of the Earth was good, in my opinion. I loved the ending. I am in need of fluff at the minute and I am reading The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks

Clamiary my sister has the sequel to the Pillars of the Earth and is enjoying it.

Was The Pillars of the Earth good? I am looking for another good read.

DanoStone in Book talk : Cry like a baby (Jun 12, 2008, 7:50pm)

... :( However, the ones that really rip me to pieces are Angela's Ashes, Wizard and Glass and teariest of all, for me, is The Pillars of The Earth. I have certain parts of that one tear-stained to the extent that I can find the saddest parts in seconds whenever I'm in need of a good cry. Boo-ho ...

... amazing. I am sorry to say that it dragged a bit in the second third, hence, only four stars. I continue to listen to Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.

#22 - The Pillars of the Earth (Ken Follet)

I am in Pakistan trying not to feel Shame by Salman Rushdie, and also in 12th Century England with Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.

I just finished The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, and will be starting The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton tonight. I haven't read The Age of Innocence for about 20 years - since college - and I'm really looking forward to it.

Talbin, I was pretty unimpressed by The Pillars of the Earth. At 973 pages, that is a long time to be unimpressed. Everyone else does seem to love it, though. Maybe I'm missing something.

21. The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. 973 pages A solid read, although not as good as all the hype would lead one to believe.

... Call Them Ghosts: The Spirit Children of Fontaine Manse- A True Story by Kathleen McConnell The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett poof! went to new homes...

#25 Mckait - I'm currently reading The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. I hope to finish it over the weekend. I'm listening to A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. I really want to read The Terror by Dan Simmons, but I may need a break after Pillars!

Just finished The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett and was exhausted by it! So I picked up a fluffy book Where Are The Children by Mary Higgins Clark to refresh my brain...

4. Ken Follett - The Pillars of the Earth

Feeling a bit warped from time travel, i am simultaneously in 12th Century England with Pillars of the Earth and in "almost Pakistan" trying not to feel Shame.

51 - Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett

... be worth looking at, but a good skimming might be enough. :) My total pages are no where near yours! I'm reading The Pillars of the Earth now. That should help my page count!

Like a few others here, I'm reading Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. So far it's an enjoyable and quick read (even if it's over 900 pages), but I'm finding it's not living up to the high expectations I had from reading reviews about the book. The story is interesting, the plot well thought ...

I am listening to Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet. No idea how this one escaped me for two decades, but it did and I'm entranced. Will get the follow up as well.

... to the group...glad to have you here. I'm reading Playing for Pizza by John Grisham. I felt beat to death reading Pillars of the Earth for bookclub. That was over one thousand pages, people and in the smallest print only a mouse could read. JESUS!

I just started Pillars of the Earth as well, although as an audiobook. So far, so good.

>94, mckait, what a great description for Pillars of the Earth! I think you'll find it comfier as you read it! I myself have finally gotten the guts to pick up another weighty novel, The Autobiography of Henry VIII by Margaret George. Despite having to awkwardly stuff it in my gym bag ...

Thanks to a post claimary made elsewhere.. I pulled The Pillars of the Earth from my TBR pile and began it today. It already feels like a comfy old sweatshirt of a read ( that is a good thing) .. and I don't remember ever reading any of Ken Follett before..

"Pillars of the Earth is going everywhere with me these days." Thanks clam... you just helped me to choose my next read! Added Possessing The Secret of Joy by Alice Walker to the pile of books to go to a good home. and BlueSalamander.. you read all of those books then returned ...

... one book, but three bound together, & a review of one would contain spoilers for the others. If you enjoyed Ken Folletts Pillars of the Earth you will want to read The Heaven Tree Trilogy.

I'm back in 12th century England with Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.

... clubs. I haven't started it yet, but some of the other club members are already giving me the 'thumbs down' signal. Pillars of the Earth is going everywhere with me these days.

... to put it down for a day or so. Lots of murder, rape, bad guys winning, etc. I do recommend it, particularly if you liked The Pillars of the Earth.

... read Lie Down with Lions back in the 1980s and I wasn't impressed. That's one of the reasons why I put off reading Pillars for so long. Your poor sister, SpicyCat. :o/

I just started The Pillars of the Earth yesterday for my women's book club. Since it's so fat we're reading it in halves. Oh, it's just like gourmet popcorn in print! :o)

... I looked at your profile just to see :) btw I like your use of a ticker for a really long book. I keep wanting to squeeze Pillars of the Earth into some category here ... if I do, its 973 pages deserves a ticker!

I FINALLY finished Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. I liked it well enough, but I didn't think is was made of diamonds and gold like some others do. Jenson AKA DL -- how about Other Lives: The Story of Reincarnation for you? There are no reviews and it looks interesting. I've got ...

18. Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. Calm down, people, just because it's a "sweeping epic" doesn't make it great literature. It's a book. It's a decent book. I like the middle ages, I like architecture, and I like epics, so this was okay. But there was no amazing word play or symbolism or ...

This past weekend I finished Pride and Prejudice and The Pillars of the Earth. Yesterday I started Death in a White Tie and I'm 600 pages in on And Ladies of the Club.

I am about to read Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett because that is what the book club is discussing this time. Once I get through that, I intend to do some re-reading. I have chosen: Dark Legend by Christine Feehan, Return of the Warrior by Kinley macGregor, Wild Orchids ...

World Without End, the follow up to The Pillars of the Earth was very good. I liked World Without End much better but I listened to the audio version and the narrator was fantastic.

... Pride and Prejudice on TV last weekend I decided to read it again. It is one of my favorite books of all time. 68. The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett This books is really long, but I liked it a lot. The focus of the story is on Kingsbridge Priory and the building of a new ...

You have my permission to post my reviews; past, present, and future. I swear I'm almost done with Pillars of the Earth. I love the idea of the wiki, but i'm having trouble grasping the Wiki (GRTB) within a Wiki (LT) thing -- especially with the multiple pages. I'm sure it's just me and my ...

jcmilley's post about Pillars of the Earth reminds me of another amazing and historically well-researched series about cathedral building in the 13th century: The Heaven Tree trilogy by Edith Pargeter, who is probably better known as Ellis Peters of Brother Cadfael fame. She also wrote A ...
