I stuck with Pillars of the Earth to the end because I truly liked the beginning of the book and hoped the book would improve through the dragging parts, but after finishing it disappointed, no way was I going to tackle World Without End. This week, I abandoned Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife. I ...

I ended up skimming a lot of Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. These novels did not live up to the hype, although I have definitely read worse! It was pretty cool that in both novels the women ruled.... how could we have left the middle-ages without females???

I thoroughly enjoyed Pillars of the Earth. However, I did chuckle a few times when I realized it was a bit like watching the television series "24" in the sense that the speed at which disasters can occur is a bit.....a tad.....okay, way too much.

I've a brand new copy of World Without End staring me in the face. I haven't read good reviews on it--Pillars of the Earth was really a good read, but I think I'd better give up on my plans for World Without End. Thanks for making up my mind!

My votes go to Gone with the Wind and Pillars of the Earth, both great, long novels.

Pillars of the Earth and World Without End both by Ken Follet should fit the bill. Both center around life in Kingsbridge, England. The first is set in the 12th century, the second in the 14th. Soap opera-ish, but emotional and engaging. Oh and while each individual installment isn't over 1 ...

I don't know if I'd add Pillars of the Earth, while it is an engrossing book and a fantastic story, the writing is sub-par. It's popular fiction, and I don't know if I'd call it literature.

Ken Follett wrote Pillars of the Earth and World Without End about life in Medieval England. I found them fairly authentic but a bit clean in his description of living conditions. The strength of the women in the book endeared me to the stories!

Talbin, I was pretty unimpressed by The Pillars of the Earth. At 973 pages, that is a long time to be unimpressed. Everyone else does seem to love it, though. Maybe I'm missing something.
