I loved this book. The author recreated the Steinbeck trip fifty years later. Instead of a custom built motorhome, he towed his small airstream and instead of a poodle, he took his aging maltese, Max. The author followed the same route, but where Steinbeck was only really interested in the people he encountered on the way, Zeigler was also interested in the places and I felt he made more commentary on this than Steinbeck did in his memoir. Along the way, Zeigler visits different schools and at one of the first he commits to sending the children a postcard from every state visited - a lovely idea, but not as easy to acomplish as he thought. This is recommended reading for anyone interested in travel in the USA. Read Travels with Charley first and then read this one - they are similar and different in equal measure and Travels with Max is enriched with the addition of photographs. ( )

Inspired by Travels with Charley, Gregory Zeigler celebrated the 50th anniversary of renowned Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck's storied trip. In 2009, Zeigler and his dog Max drove and camped 15,000 miles over nine weeks, exploring the country and determining what Americans are like today. Travels with Max offers a retrospective on Steinbeck and his work, as well as an insightful, humorous and upbeat perspective on modern America.
