The stories of the men who were defeated for the presidency.

Probably my favorite history, despite bias correctly noted by antiquary.

Of note: The 1966 edition contains perspective on presidents since the original publication. While these are very limited essays on Dewey, Stevenson and Goldwater, it includes special consideration of Richard Nixon as an also-ran from his failed 1960 run, and speculates on Nixon's political future. Worth checking out just for a "snapshot of 1966" perspective of Nixon's career and the specific political landscape of 1966. ( )

Fascinating theme, strong Democratic Party bias, some humor. Probably represented something like a consensus of historical views when originally written, but on some issues (e.g. Reconstruction) views have changed since. ( )

Does the better man always win? Would we have annexed Canada, avoided the Civil War and World War II if other presidents had been elected? What opportunities were lost, and what tragedies were averted, when people made their choice at the polls?
