Another winner in the Calvin series. This Hawaiian slice-of-life has suspense to it when a raging storm grips the islands. I like that although Calvin's father isn't around, he still has strong male role models in Ledward and Clarence. ( )

My second and third grade classes love the Calvin books so I was excited for an opportunity to finally read one and discover why they were so popular. The setting is so different from Montana, yet the story is accessible and familiar; I think that is part of the appeal - experiencing a new place and discovering its similarities.
Curricular connections can be made with third grade social studies. A unit wherein the students read a Calvin Coconut story and then research the specifics for a project would be engaging and go deeper into connecting students with island facts.

Young Calvin can’t say no to adventure, and readers looking for a fast-moving, action-filled story will want to check out Hero of Hawaii. Calvin is eagerly awaiting his sister’s birthday party, where he is planning on giving her the best gift ever. That is, until the big storm hits the islands and Calvin’s curiosity takes him to the center of all the action, where he must try and rescue his friend Willy from the raging storm waters. While Calvin is an expert at getting into sticky situations, his humor and good-natured ways make him a likable narrator. The fifth book in the Calvin Coconut series, readers will be left anticipating the next exciting installment. Recommended. For ages 7-10. ( )
