As the first Gulf War looms, Eastern Iowa University is host to a surprising number of foreign grad students, and some of them seem to be getting up to some 'shenanigans'. Ex-wrestler and now stalwart lawman Clyde Banks has his eyes open, however, and is seeing things he can't quite believe. At the same time, Betsy Vandeventer, a fresh-faced young CIA operative in Washington DC, is having her eyes opened whether she wants to or not.

In this spy thriller-cum-academic farce, Neal Stephenson demonstrates his talent for wacky plotting, quirky yet believable characterizations, and surprising insight. It's not up to the standard of Cryptonomicon, his masterpiece, but it's still a good read that's time well-spent. ( )

This novel is full of biting satire, of academia, small Midwestern towns, and government. As an academic, I guffah'ed repeatedly at the wry descriptions of university politics and corruption! As after reading other books by Neil Stephenson, I desperately hope he branches into screenplays - the imagery in this novel is equally exquisitely detailed and creative! ( )

From his triumphant debut with Snow Crash to the stunning success of his latest novel, Quicksilver, Neal Stephenson has quickly become the voice of a generation. In this now-classic political thriller, he and fellow author J. Frederick George tell a savagely witty, chillingly topical tale set in the tense moments of the Gulf War.

When a foreign exchange student is found murdered at an Iowa University, Deputy Sheriff Clyde Banks finds that his investigation extends far beyond the small college town—all the way to the Middle East. Shady events at the school reveal that a powerful department is using federal grant money for highly dubious research. And what it’s producing is a very nasty bug.

Navigating a plot that leads from his own backyard to Washington, D.C., to the Gulf, where his Army Reservist wife has been called to duty, Banks realizes he may be the only person who can stop the wholesale slaughtering of thousands of Americans. It’s a lesson in foreign policy he’ll never forget.
