In 1973 werd betty Jean scales vermoord. Haar lijk werd gedumpt bij de kiezelgroeven van el Monte, Californië. De zaak kwam als 'onopgelost' in de archieven terecht. In 1997 raakt een schrijver geobsedeerd door de gedachte haar moordenaar te vinden. De Scales-zaak was El Montes tweede onopgeloste moordzaak: vijftien jaar eerder was er een vrouw gewurgd en eveneens ergens gedumpt. Zij was de moeder van de schrijver. ( )
