Epigraph
“The past is not dead, in fact, it is not even past.”
—William Faulkner
Dedication
To the brave founders of Historic Savannah Foundation who, more than half a century ago,
set out to save one of the most beautiful cities in America. In doing so they battled developers,
politicians, short-sighted citizens, and sometimes even their own husbands: Mrs. Frank
McIntire, Mrs. Anna Hunter, Mrs. Reuben Clark, Mrs. Louis Roos, Mrs. Sam Adler,
Miss Jane Wright, and Mrs. R. C. Roebling. In addition to those founders, we salute
their many supporters, exemplified by: Mr. Walter Hartridge, Mills B. Lane IV, Lee and
Emma Adler, and others. We also wish to acknowledge The Savannah College of Art and
Design (SCAD), the resources and talent of which have contributed immeasurably to the
preservation of historic Savannah. We owe all of them so much.
First words
Savannah, Immortal City is the first of a four-part
series titled Civil War Savannah. It offers a pictorial
and textual history of all the important
antebellum and Civil War sites in the city of Savannah,
Georgia, and surrounding Chatham County.
Quotations
Visitors to antebellum Savannah invariably remarked on its tree-lined streets
and gracious green squares. “Beneath these trees, lamps are suspended . . .
These lights, interspersed with the many long shadows that fall everywhere,
heighten the romantic effect that the first sight of these streets would naturally produce
in the mind unaccustomed to Southern scenes.”
