Meredith's husband is in jail for running a Ponzi scheme. Connie lost her husband to cancer a couple of years ago. The two women were fast friends until around then when they ended their relationship with bad feelings. But now, Meredith needs Connie more than ever and Connie easily comes through for her. The story is set on Nantucket which adds a wonderful backdrop to Silver Girl. I found the book dragged in several parts and I don't know that I cared much for Meredith so I rated it in the middle. I came to this book via my reading group and I stayed for the descriptions of the Nantucket scenery, but not much else stood out. It's ooooookay and doesn't have any gaping flaws, but overall it's kind of shallow and predictable--pretty girls, bad boys, trouble with the kids, etc--only the $ amounts are bigger. If the Madoff mess intrigues you then you might find this a more interesting read than I did. ( )

Every summer I read an Elin Hilderbrand novel. They just scream summer to me. I’ve been doing this for a few years and I have read many, but not all of her books. Silver Girl, however, is my favorite thus far. The characters are more developed and more believable than those in her other books. Silver Girl also benefits from a two subplots involving the mystery of just who is terrorizing Meredith Delinn and where did Freddie Delinn hide his ill-gotten billions with Meredith putting together the clues. The conclusion to subplot one is not satisfying, the conclusion to number two is ok if just a little far-fetched. But they certainly add an interesting dynamic to the book. Silver Girl is your typical Hildebrand novel – friendship, love, drama and food on Nantucket, just better!

Absolutely engrossing, as per usual with Elin Hilderbrand - summer between two covers. Small cozy details that I love - her writing reminds me of Elizabeth Berg in that respect. ( )

The Good: I've read all of Elin Hilderbrand's previous novels, so I had high expectations for this novel and it didn't disappoint. There is something comforting knowing that you will pretty much enjoy a book before you start it. When you become a fan of an author and know the sound of their writing, know the little quirks that make them such a good writer in your eyes, reading their books becomes an escape. I would label Elin Hilderbrand's novels as the PERFECT beach reads. Even if you aren't on a beach, after you read her novels, you want to be. I think this novel, along with all her other ones are so polished, so well written that it's an all consuming read. I am totally engulfed in the characters, scenes etc. In this particular novel, I thought Hilderbrand really captured what it would be like to be the wife of a Ponzi Scheme conspirator and mastermind. Meredith is under investigation, broke and the victim of extreme hatred by those that lost millions in her husband's scheme. Hilderbrand really made Meredith a woman I could relate to if this were my situation. She is both loyal and loving to her husband, but extremely devastated by what he's done and all the lives he's ruined...including hers. She was the perfect mixture of good and bad traits and I think anyone reading this novel will laugh and cry with Meredith. I also thought the other characters in the book were written so well that I knew them by the end. I even enjoyed the mild love story that was weaved through. It was enough to satisfy my longing for romance but not too much to be considered a "romance" novel. Really though, this book should have been read while I was on the beach with a pina colada in my hand. :)

The Bad: Just a few nit-picky things here...I thought that the tension between the main characters Meredith and Connie was caused by something much bigger than what it really was and it was disappointing. The way the characters are written you can tell they were the BEST of BEST kind of friends and it to me, it doesn't seem like the "reason" they stopped talking was enough to tear them apart. I wish Hilderbrand would have explored Meredith's relationship with Toby more.. I felt like we were really getting places towards the end of the book and then BAM it's over. I wanted more!!!

P.S. I'm putting a disclaimer here that when it comes to Elin Hilderbrand, I'm a bit biased as she is one of my mentors, she graduated from University of Iowa's Writers' Workshop and I've sat in the same classroom she has and I love to see great writers come from that program and make it big.

Overall, this was as expected, a great read! I would give it an A!

*I received this book free from the publisher through www.netgalley.com. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. ( )

Sigh, another book by Elin Hilderbrand set against my favourite backdrop... Nantucket Island! Once again, the sights and sounds of the island were warm and inviting and, as a reader, I really have started to believe that this island hold magical powers and your troubles will melt away as you step off the ferry.

Can you imagine what it would feel like if you found out that everything in your life was a lie? That the man you have lived with, loved, and had a family with was NOT the man you believed him to be?

This is exactly what has happened to Meredith Martin Delinn. Her million dollar lifestyle was ripped out from under her when her husband was charged with running a $50 billion dollar ponzi scheme. Everything she believed to be true, wasn't. Left with only 'pennies' in her bank account, she falls back on someone whom she shunned years before, someone who had always been her rock and someone who she hoped would once again be her one true friend.

Connie, having dealt with more heartache in the last three-years than she can imagine, receives a call from her long-lost best friend and together, the two of them depart on a whirlwind summer on Nantucket. A summer that will help them reconnect, help them deal with their own heartaches, and a summer that will set the stage for the rest of their lives.

Silver Girl is a book that relates to so many people on so many different levels. Being able to overcome your past demons and look towards a brighter future is something that most people strive for each and every day. Watching these two people, who have been so through so much, travel this road together was wonderful.

While there may be many bumps in the road, if you stay strong and keep your head held high, you will always get to where you are going!

Although the timely premise titillates, the story soon degenerates into just another redemptive middle-aged reconciliation of past and present, complete with many bromidic meditations on the true nature of love.
