Een tragikomische geschiedenis om bij te grinniken, typisch voor het werk van Elsschot. Met dodelijk zinnetjes ("t Leeglopen had een uitstekende invloed op zijn gedrag thuis") en rake beschrijvingen ("Er kwam een opwaartse deining in 't slanke lichaam, alsof het zwol en spartelde in de al te nauwe blouse. Zij liet haar nat mondje even openhangen en sloeg toen aan, als een nachtegaal ...") en natuurlijk de beroemdste slotzin uit de Nederlandse literatuur, die ik hier niet ga citeren. ( )
