Loading... Hair in Funny Places (edition 2000)by Babette Cole
Grade 2-4-While there is a plethora of sex-education books for young readers, this picture book concentrates on how hormones affect young people during puberty. Ted, an animated stuffed bear, explains to his young owner about her parents' entry into adolescence. "Mr. and Mrs. Hormone-are in charge of growing up-[they] mix the potions that turn children into adults." The physical and emotional effects of their concoctions are discussed, including hair growth, pimples, menstruation ("Then she found a tiny drop of blood in her underpants!"), and wet dreams ("Then some sticky stuff actually came out").
This is one of the funniest and most irreverant books about puberty that has ever been published. A girl wants to know what she will be when she grows up. Her friend tells her she will be whatever Mr. and Mrs. Hormone decide. For about eleven years they sleep without making themselves known. When they start working, first the breast enlarge and hair begins to grow in funny places, your voice begins to deepen and who girls blood can be found in your underpants. This is called puberty. You continue to grow in size and sometimes acne can appear. Not everyone is affected in the same way and everyone is different. Next, the narrator talks about boys developing. His hormones began at about eight. His hormones floated in the inside. His shoulders broader and his penis thickened. He too began to grow hair in funny places but his voice began squeaky. Boys soon take interest in girls. Boys too can get acne and grow a hormone to produce babies. Boys and girls grow up differently but they potion from Mr. and Mrs. Hormones brought them together. This is a good book for older children who are going through puberty. Children this age may feel embarrassed about the changes their bodies are going through, but this booko lets them know that they are normal. This would be a great lesson to incorporate with science and anatomy. This is a very funny book about growing up. It is about how your body changes when your going through puberty. This is not like most puberty books. It is funny and has creative/silly illustrations. Great for kids who are curious about growing up and entering the early stages of puberty. Shows a girl and a boy at different stages of growth; informational and funny. Could make this uncomfortable topic a little easier for parents to talk about with their kids. What a wonderful book! This book is appropriate for children who are starting to ask questions about sexuality and puberty, although the cover of this book is kind of misleading. The illustrations are silly, but also show girls and boys in their various stages of development in appropriate ways. |
