Aunque la novela está estructurada, como "La dama de blanco", a base de testimonios de diferentes personas, que cuentan hechos sucesivos, esta primera parte está constituida casi por completo por el testimonio del viejo criado de la casa. En este caso, la trama detectivesca no comparte protagonismo con ninguna otra forma literaria, aunque Collins maneja el texto con gran maestría, de forma que no sólo se nos cuentan cosas, sino que podemos apreciar claramente la personalidad del narrador, sus virtudes, sus contradicciones y sus dudas. Todo esto se va engarzando en la investigación sobre la desaparición del misterioso diamante que da título a la novela, y al que indefectiblemente persiguen tanto un trío de misteriosos hindúes como la desgracia para su poseedor.
